How To Remove & Install a Centre Lock Disc Brake Rotor

Disc brake rotors can come with a 6 bolt fitment or a centre lock fitment. In this short video I show you how to remove and install a centre lock disc brake rotor.

I hope you find this video useful and this video gives you all the information you need, but if I have missed something, please feel free to stick a question in the comments section.

The torque setting for the lock ring is usually stated on the lock ring itself, however if this is not the case then I would go for 40nm (every lock ring I have come across for a disc brake rotor has been 40nm)

For internal notches use a cassette lock ring tool
For external notches use an external bottom bracket tool.

Please note - I am not a professional or a quaified mechanic and the tools required for your lockring may differ to the ones stated in this video. If in doubt, check with your local bike shop or seek a professional opinion.

Although 6 bolt is a market standard and a better system, let's at least appreciate that Shimano used an existing tool instead of coming up with another random size lockring. My bottom bracket tool rubs on the disc when i tighten, and i need to be creative, but at least it's working and i dont need to buy yet another tool.

Thank you!
I thought it was going to be more complicated. Didn’t realise it was just the centre lock ringn

0:40 I dont like how center lock tool is slightly bigger than the screw itself, which means it can accidentally slip and destroy those small grooves

It was so effortless what you did it. I can’t get the ring lock to budge one bit. Is there some lubricant that can be used?

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. Probably a stupid question: the threadlocks are not to be greased before fitting of a new rotor?

Drives me nuts that the external lock tool is always named *for bottom brackets* when it’s also for disc rotor removal. Madness

What is the model of the tool you are using? Do you have a link so I can buy it?

Can you please give some indications on which shimano tools I need to buy for all the cases you have exposed in the video? Thank you

Is there any indication when you have tightened it to 40 NM or do you have to guess?

Are all centerlock hubs & rotors compatible with each other? Is there more than one type of centerlock? I ask because the SRAM CLR-X rotors I got are TIGHT going on to my Elite Wheels. I had to use a rubber mallet till the threads from the lock ring could catch and then used the ring to tighten. Thanks.

Bought two spanner (external notches) tools now, neither grip properly. Driving me nuts. 🤬🤬
