It always amazes me how much pride the British take in the Commonwealth -- evidently in their minds as a symbol of the enduring glory of empire. In my 65 years in the biggest part of the Commonwealth (at least by sq km), Canada, I have never ever heard anyone even mention the Commonwealth, except for the Commonwealth Games.

I think I’m going to give the guy a pass on the leaky pen. His Mother just died and he’s undoubtedly under a great deal of pressure. Something like that happening to me could easily get under my skin. Complaining about something like that isn’t an outburst, it’s just complaining. Not saying he’s an angel, he’s a human.

i think the idea of monarchy is... archaic to be nice. however, seeing him get frustrated with the pen bleeding all over his hand and considering he was wearing a bleach white shirt, i actually felt it to be relatable and personifying. i liked seeing that the monarch experiences normal human emotion

She was not the dead of 2bn people Commonwealth; She simply wasn't.For example India is a republic and its role in commonwealth is different. She was not head of India.

Not a Royalist but I have to say they need better PR consultants. If they were concerned with their longevity, Charles should've excused himself somehow from the line of succession while the queen was still alive. Will & Kate could've been so beloved as King and Queen Consort. They would've directly connected the monarchy to the millenial/gen z generations and ensured 50 years of "steady she goes" for the United Kingdom.

A great PR team manipulating the public, can make anyone seem "Great". 🤔

Have a national referendum whether to phase out the monarchy.

4:23 - Yeah, Charles’ Reign will be alot like Edward VII’s (Not the Abdicating one, the one from 1901-1910) that way, a bridge figure after the end of a massive reign who’s whole short reign will mostly be spent preparing for the next.

How can you have a Monarchy and a Democracy at the same time?

I think I was 6 years old when the Princess passed away due to a car accident.
I remember thinking that the Paparazzi's where chasing her and she ran away.
A know it was the same year in Canada they released the 2 dollar coin, the Toonie.
I think I put most of what I know into the location or memory of this coin, at least in terms of inheritance and of wealth management.

@4:06: What is this incredibly important role that the monarchy plays? How does the royal family contribute to the well-being of the British people and the Commonwealth? We expect more from you, The Economist!

British empire’s sun never sets- once told by someone. Their history was as dark as bright their current is.

Bla bla bla, what a load of empty BS, I'd expect something more open minded and critical of this current circus from The Economist🤦‍♂️

Let's see if this makes sense as a nation: 1) let's elevate a family to above-commoners status, 2) let's pretend that they don't have red blood, 3) let's pretend that they are better than the rest of us commoners and, 4) let's lavish them with riches to the tune of $28 BILLION and over 191, 000 acres of land. Well, that's what the Brits have been doing and it appears rather silly to me.

The monarchy should be abolished! It’s a waste of money, too exclusive, racist and archaic ! No one family should be born into extra privileges just because their ancient ancestor was a great Warrior a thousand years ago.
