31 years ago I was trying to decide between aerospace and mechanical engineering. A professor at a college I was visiting told me 90% of the engineers in aerospace are mechanical engineers, which helped seal the deal for me. I chose mechanical engineering.

Fast forward to today, where I am a successful engineer at a large aerospace company. I have to say, the professor was absolutely right about the 90/10 split. Mechanical engineering is the more generalized discipline, and will allow you to work in every industry on earth. Aerospace engineering is highly specialized, but is still mechanical engineering at its core.

If you’re trying to decide between the two ask yourself a few questions. Do you want to maximize your future job potential? If yes pick ME. Do you want to earn advanced degrees and do research or work in academia? Then perhaps specializing in AE would suit you better. Ultimately I think anyone can make either degree work in the aerospace field, or any other field for that matter. The best of both worlds may be programs that offer a ME degree with a minor in AE.

I want to be a aerospace engineer but do a master's of astrophysics so I can be more involved with astronautical engineering.

I'm about 3 semesters away from finishing my degree in aerospace engineering. I'm also at a polytechnic university so there is a heavy emphasis on hands on learning. I was able to land an internship outside of my field working as a quality engineer in a facility that makes bolts and fasteners but I just got accepted for an Internship at a major aerospace company. Many of my friends who have already graduated are working on space systems, doing wind tunnel testing and programming aircraft control systems right out the gate. I would say that while aerospace engineering is definitely a niche field, if you can work on rockets, fighter jets, and satellites then you can probably work on just about any system outside of our category. I am a die hard aerospace fan and also an aviation enthusiast so I am quite biased

That's exactly why I picked ME. I enjoy working on planes and rockets through clubs but I'm sure at some point in my life I'd love to explore more. A degree in ME gives me that flexibility!

You are giving me hope. I love the aerospace industry, but I got admitted to mechanical engineering at CSUN; they do have an emphasis in aeronautics, so I am going for that track. Plus, I heard that we are able to take 1 class per semester at other CSUs that are not taught at our school, which is great because I'd love to have a stronger aerospace background even though my degree will be ME. I am super excited, and your video increased my excitement. Thank you.

Thanks for the amazing video, Aerospace engineering has been my dream since forever but due to some unfortunate conditions I can't pursue it. And now I'll take the mechanical engineering, I'm glad I could still work in both

I am a 15 yo that has so many dreams. I like to be an engineer to design and build rockets, aircrafts, electric transportation, energy plant and etc and be an entrepreneur and have companies that will help. I also wanna be a theoretical physicist so that way i can answer the questions of my curiosity since i was a child. But i this video you helped me decide to choose mechanical engineering because i am not only focusing on aerospace and i want to take that opportunity because mechanical engineering if not the worlds most broadest engineering field.

I want to become an Aerospace Engineer however I chose Mechanical Engineering because its flexible and in demand in my country. Well when time came i can work in the field of aerospace.

Hi! Thank you for this useful video, your channel is amazing!
I am taking a bachelor's degree in Power Engineering, but I'm in love with the aerospace industry since my childhood! I've learned a lot about astronautical engineering, taken part in Olympiads and Forums connected with Space Exploration in my country. And now I have to choose a Master's degree (in the US university). I actually can't fully understand what is more relevant for me with my Power engineering degree: ME or Aerospace 🙈
I wanna work on Space X or NASA!) And create Mars exploration projects!

The best is to have both degrees. Aerospace has lots of overlapping courses with mechanical and you just need to take few more… and there you go, you are a double degree student.

Can I get intern at space company if I choose mechanical? I wanted to study astronautical engineering. Though my country offer aerospace engineering but it is more focused on aeronautical engineering.
so i was thinking to choose mechanical for bachlore and aerospace in master..

Great, , ,
What do you think about studying aerospace engineering with double major in mechanical engineering ( because 90% of aerospace engineering is based on mechanical)

I'm currently majoring in aeronautical engineering and I started doubting because I'm afraid about not finding any jobs and I don't want to be unemployed, many people have told me that mechanical offers more opportunities and is much broader, but honestly I don't know what to do :( could someone give me some advice? I love my major so much but I don't know if it will worth it, specially because of its difficulty and also if I will be able to recover the money investment I'm putting into it ;( also I'm already in my second year ;( please help ;( ps I'm not from USA
