The CO2 did not "replace" the oxygen, it _displaced_ the natural atmosphere - all the gases including Nitrogen. Also, any gas would be lethal in the concentration of the CO2 released by the limnic eruption. It is a mistake to single out the CO2 as "noxious" or toxic. What was a problem was an unmixed excess.

I peer Reviewed a government report about a project in Africa where the CIA approved a Carbon sequestration experiment that involved pumping tons of CO2 into the ground under a lake bed.
