Been dumping my tank for 40 years never thought of doing the gray tank “briefly” first. Thanks for the tip, by the way I haven’t been soaked “yet“

Learned to 'SPLASH' the gray tank right after we first got out RV. Was at a dump station, starting to dump our tanks when the people in the lane next to us had their hose come off the fitting. Five gallons of black tank spewed out the rear of their slide in camper. After some gagging and flashbacks to my first port call to Naples (1988) I realized I better test my own hose, and I've been 'splashing the gray' ever since! Thanks for these 'Quick Tips', they help newbies!

The exact thing happened to me. Lucky for me we were at our house that has an RV dump station. I was literally laying in the black tank stuff trying to turn it off. Tried to give the wife a hug, but she ran from me. Now I triple check to make sure ALL prongs are hooked properly. Never thought of the gray water first as a test, GREAT IDEA! I will do from now on. Thanks for the tip! John, Bend, OR, Retired USCG E8/CWO2

Been doing the Gray first for awhile because of the following reason, first gray for a few seconds and then close it, open black. It helps to wet the drain hose and make dumping of the black easier. Great tip.

So simple, it's genius! Grey test before black.

Good idea about a shot of grey water to make sure the connection is good, in 8 yrs of part time, I haven't had an issue, but you know the old saying there are those who have and those who will. Be safe out there!!!!

Both those happened to me. The rear ear of the hose, behind the black flush was not connected and I didn't see it. I never though my reflexes were so fast. The second was the sudden rush of black forced the hose out of the hole in the ground. Luckily I stopped it immediately before too much got out, or before anyone noticed. I now start the black flush slowly and gradually increase it to prevent the hose from popping out but I think your gray test is a good idea.

I had a hose explode. I needed the extension hose I had and it had cracked. I learned to inspect for cracking and little holes/ punctures before using.

Great quick tip! We had a little explosion but it was from being sidetracked while rinsing the black tank. 30mins later...what's that sound? Oh no! It's the hose going into the black tank to rinse it! Hose off. Needed to release the built up pressure and barely touched the sewer hose. The thing burst off its connection and blew all over Aimee! Video entitled "Our Crappy Day" documents it. Lesson learned: don't get distracted while dealing with water compartment issues!!!

Love all your tips. My quick tip on dumping tanks. Take an old mud flap or heavy piece of rubber, plastic or even an old heavy towel and cover the valves when dumping. Then pull, because sometimes the sh*t will spit at you through a crack or bad seal that you missed. I'm not going to tell you how I know...
See ya.

Great tips! And the rocks near the sewer are not for decoration, even with the donut! These quick tips are great to re-enforce camping tips.

I’d rather wear the gray water than the black! Good advice

Gray tank test tip. A great tip. Not happening to me, but the rig ahead had the hose come off. I learned from his mistake. The mess was bad, so I left to return the next day. Thank you for sharing and have a great day!

I put a 6" long clear section on the vehicle end of the hose so I know when it's done and when rinsing water is clear. I see your elbow at the other end is clear and serves a similar purpose. My clear section is also available with a valve that can be left on the sewer pipe and is useful when you forget to close the valves after installing the cap. Surprise, surprise. Your valves are easy to see, many are not.

Great tip! I have electric dump valves on our rig that have a red indicator light if the valve is open. I once removed the safety cap from the hose connector on the RV and forgot to check that both the dump valves were closed. As you can imagine the black water valve was left open from the last time I dumped!! Not Good!!! 🤢🤮😫😩 Tip: Make sure both valves are closed BEFORE removing the cap!
