We have camped in a camper for at least 30 years with no events. But in the past years, it's gotten worse. Last year, we had someone knock on our window at 3am. We were terrified. And there were meth heads around. Good luck up north! Avoid certain small towns in Washington such as Hoquium and Aberdeen. We had problems at Grayland State park campground, although it is a very nice campground. Yes, we are afraid, not of animals and bears, but of the two legged kind. Still, it's worth it. Never respond if someone knocks at your door at night. Sometimes they're testing to see who answers, female, male?

1. Always watch the water line before setting camp, anytime you camp near water
2. Always see if you can have a quick exit, van/RV facing the road/exit, without you having to reverse and make a turn
3. Don’t leave rubbish outside, that’s critters and animal magnet. You’ll have noises and disturbances from them. Sleep disrupted and you worry for no reason. Secondly, you can’t leave at a heart beat because your rubbish is still outside.

I’ve been camping in a camper with my family my whole life and it was mostly really safe (we usually aren’t in big cities either) but we once had to spent a night on a normal parking lot in a slightly bigger city because we had to get on a really early ferry, and in the middle of the night some person started walking around our camper, trying to look inside and mumbling weird stuff and that time I was happy to have my German Shepard dog, because while he loved us and always listened to us well, he absolutely hated strangers and so he barked really loudly and aggressively, making the person outside leave, so I believe dogs really are the best ❤

Probably should not leave trash outside like that. Great way to get critters at night. If you are in bear country the critter may be a lot bigger and meaner than you want to deal with. They can open up that RV like a tin can and eat yummy contents inside. You included

We ALWAYS go to bed 100% prepared & ready to leave at the first sign of alarm - so that we DON'T have to step outside of the RV - not for ANYTHING. It's a case of start up & go immediately.. and I would think that should be a habit for anyone who is travelling. Packin' isn't a bad thing, either - as a last resort.

Next time roll up your windows. Going outside wasn't a smart move. Just get out if feel threatened!!

Been camping out of my Jeep and a van for over the past six years and have never had a problem because I'm smart enough to verify my surroundings and understanding with that tide would be coming in at night or flash floods coming down Creek basins from the mountains of snow melt I would not be parking so close to the edge of a river or a beach

The police are no help...they always tell me: Just move your RV to somewhere safer. So I do. But before that, people always knocking at my door at 3AM at night trying to get inside my camper RV because the weather is so cold outside, at least 12 times a night...I call them Meth zombies. Gunshots heard all night, am I afraid? Would you be?

I drove and moved to Seattle, Washington. To a nice RV park. I hope it's less scary here. Wish me luck.

Carry a shotgun, don't let anyone know you have it. If anything or anyone comes through your door, just aim in their general direction. For you ladies that have never shot a gun, you'll find a shotgun shell puts out a wide pattern so you're sure to hit your target. Just go to a gun range and do some practice shots and get the feel of the "kick" and how to load it, etc. Take some classes. Carry a pistol or have both. You didn't use to have to worry so much about bad people but with drugs as they are now, you do. Good luck and stay safe.

What not to do when you hear a noise outside.

You can’t park in an isolated area and expect to be SAFE. I don’t know much about RV life…I would try to park with other R’s or vehicles. AND…bag your trash…take it w/you

We e been all out west and more and never an incident. Campers are usually good friendly people. Boondocking can potentially have some interaction if your trespassing but we’ve had great experiences. Except for the tanker of ammonia that flipped in Illinois last year!!!! That was life threatening, we actually escaped with only seconds to do so.

If you your living in a rv, van, etc, I really recommend going somewhere quiet and somewhere where you are safe. Campgrounds, beaches, parking lots, parks are quite dangerous areas as they are public places and someone could try to get in. Please please go to a place that is either untouched by any human or in a quiet and safe area.

Btw I’m Canadian and my area is quite safe.. (other than a couple missing reports and 1 report of a person with a gun)

one of my all time favorite things is hiking alone and doing what i want and telling no one. this qorld where everyone gathers around to tell you all the things you're doing wrong without being there is gross.
plus, had no one heard of choosing to take a risk and then dealing with the consequences? which are sometimes good and sometimes bad? this is how we grow.

1. Don't camp in waterways 2. Don't put rubbish bags on the ground 3. Isolated spots can have drug addicts or be gay pickup spots 4. If you have a big rig rig, u r using up all the space.
