As badass as the Darth Vader scene was, I believe it messes with the continuity in a very annoying way.
Darth Vader, famous Jedi killer and Imperial enforcer cuts down rebel after rebel, his mind fixed on the data tape. The tape barely escape his clutches on the now famous Tantive IV, a few hours later Vader catches up to the ship which escaped the biggest battle carried out by the rebels. What do the rebels do faced with the famous Dark lord of the Sith? Pull a Shaggy of course!
Vader: But I fought you over Scariff.
Rebel: Wasn't me!

As great and impactful as the scene was, I believe the writers and directors just wanted a cool Darth Vader scene in the movie, rather than him being quite the secondary character as was intended, and didn't pay attention how their scene would fit in continuity.

A better way to pull off the Vader scene would be to just have Admiral Raddus send a transmission to the Tantive IV, have Vader wipe out everyone in the controll room and proceed to investigate where the plans were sent to.
Vader: "Commander, prepare my ship, and set course to the Tattoine system."
Hearing Vader mention his former home planet would've given me goosebumps.

I actually think he wanted the rebels to succeed. He just wanted to make it seem like he wasn't by leaving a trail of death for the Empire and Emperor to see.
