When in the meditation chamber on Coruscant, it wasn't that he could be comfy. Instead, if was so he could meditate.

See, Meditation in Star Wars does a lot more than calm ya down if you're Force-Sensitive. You can also do so to heal injuries, albeit slowly. One thing he tried to do every so often was heal his lungs, so he didn't need his respirator. However, due to A: his bottled up anger, B: his trauma, and C: the sheer damage his lungs took, this often ends up not working.

Say what you will about the prequels, but one thing I'm absolutely grateful for is how much more humanised Darth Vader became. Things like this make him such a compelling character, rather than a big black blob of evil in a robot suit who used to be good and remembers he loves his kids
