Cautionary tale here…

I had braces when I was 12 until 17 back in mid 90s with headgear and all… my tween years were rough. My lower teeth were crowded and my upper teeth were just too many and were coming forward like a horse 😅 of course I wore my retainer for like 2 months after the braces came off cause I was DONE with this BS. Oh… I had to extract 6 teeth to make everything fit in my mouth.

After a while, one lower front tooth decided to shift forward and start doing its own thing. It was gradual how that tooth shifted, it didn’t bother me that much until 20 years passed by and I became very conscious about this odd tooth poking out in the most obnoxious way and starting to mess with my upper tooth.

So at 38, I got my adult braces on again to fix that. The orthodontist knew it was my second round and she said that “you will need to wear the retainer for the rest of your life and for the first year you better wear them ALL the time (except while eating)”.

After 18 months I took the braces off and I’ve been wearing the retainers religiously for a year. I have a pair of Hawley and a pair of clear ones cause if one is broken I will have a back up pair.

Now I wear my clear retainer as much as I can during the day, but I make sure that I do wear hawley every night, even when I’m on vacation, I don’t go anywhere without them. I’m committed for life this time.

I do not want to spend my own money again on a third round of braces at 55 and I know that my teeth will betray me sooner or later.

Wear your retainers, listen to your orthodontist, cause your parents will only pay for the first round!!! Few of my childhood friends who had braces in the 90s and neglected their retainers… got adult braces in their late 30s as well. I’d rather spend that money on cool vacations and not reliving my teenage years.

Glued in retainers on the top teeth are a pain in the butt. Very uncomfortable. You are being very upfront but people don't TELL you this stuff. I have seen orthodontists claim that you only need to wear a retainer for "about six months" after. So either they are lying and hand you a retainer and casually say "by the way, this is forever" or they actually have you stop after six months and likely need braces again.

My dentist told me to wear the clear retainers for 6 months but I wore them for over a year, then I accidentally broke the upper one. I got another one for my upper teeth but my dentist was like oh u don't need to wear it, but still I would put it on a few times in a month. Now one of my teeth feels a little shifted i went to the other dentist and he has made me a hawley's retainers. I am also wearing the invisible retainer on the lower teeth along with the hawley's retainer. Can u plz tell me how long hawley's retainer will take. The dentist said he will tighten it on my next visit. And once done he will put on a fixed retainer. The question is after my teeth is fixed like once i take the hawley's retainer off shall i go for the clear retainers or not.

i have hawley retainers and i hate them, I wake up in the morning and I need to take them out as soon as possible because it feels bad, it fits fine and there is nothing wrong with it but I would much rather have the clear retainers, how much does a clear retainer cost?

Q - There's been some minor rotation/shifting of my front tooth, after my bonded retainer broke off a tooth and was re-affixed. After consulting several orthos, most of them reco'd limited 6-9 month (re)treatment with braces. One ortho (31 years of experience) is proposing to fix using an Essix Retainer with Windows and Divots, with a 2 month ETA. Why didn't the other clinics propose this? It seems like a no-brainer.

Can retainers move teeth ? I’ve had braces twice and my front tooth came forward and rotated about 1.5 mm, I saw an orthodontist and he said I should see my dentist and get a retainer to correct it

Can u do me a favor and tell me this bc I am still in braces and have a long way to go. I had an expander but not now, just my braces. When my metal braces are taken off in abt 18 more months I will have had braces for nearly four years, maybe a bit more at the end bc I had phase one and now on phase two. Hope this makes sense? My ortho plan on my treatment says I am getting fixed bonded retainers on top teeth and lower teeth but I am also getting Hawley retainers for top teeth and lower teeth as well. Is that a normal thing to get bonded and also Hawley retainers at same time? My teeth have gone through lots of movement with braces but still a long way to go….seems like forever. I also like your cool way of doing YT …. It makes braces more understandable so ty v much 😬

Hi Dr. My top howley retainer, the wire is not in the middle, it gies to uo near the gum. My teeth looks like overjet. Should i bring it to the orthodontists?
