So in short: instead of direct external validation, social media motivates us through others’ recognition of us being validated. Trippy.

Thank you sisyphus. One must imagine sisyphus scrolling through instagram reels. (Live procrastination from pushing rock)

You see this a lot in gen z and younger. So much obsession over the aesthetics. Now, aesthetic is identity.

I've been on a social media detox since November 2023, after feeling like I was having the worst time of my life throughout the entirety of 2023. I do use YouTube tho, but there's no real interaction going on here and I don't bite into the clickbait-y thumbnails or news headlines anymore either.

I can already feel my nerves coming under control because my brain just has to think about less now. A huge part of my day that I spent scrolling through other people's stories and trying to present myself in a likeable way to them is gone now. It was really tough at first, but now I almost feel relieved to be free from its clutches.

To anybody else struggling to put off social media, trust me when I say this but it really isn't worth it. There's no amount of rationalization that will make scrolling through snippets of other people's happy lives be justified. Don't set up a blocker like Cold Turkey or something. Steel your resolve, keep thinking about quitting, and one day you'll suddenly feel that fire. Wishing you all the best.

The problem with authenticity is that we think that a Human being exists in a void, and it is separate from the society, and world, and that's wrong from the beginning, We always relate to other people or other objects." I " doesn't exists without others.

YouTube is the only social media presence I maintain anymore, and it's barely social.

Thank you. I had an epiphany and realized that my brain was rotting and I'm addicted to the internet. I'm now completely going cold turkey on what I've done before. Basically, I deleted all the fun apps off my phone, turned (most) notifications off, made the text bigger (accessibility), and made the color grayscale. Today I signed up for the SAT and took steps to have better hygiene because I struggle with that. I thank God

Edit: And I deleted all social medias from my phone, blocking them on my computer. I'm only allowing myself long-form content from YT on the computer or flatscreen. I've banned all short-form content

Instead of coolness, one of those factors should be showing the whole self, the good and the bad -- or at least the illusion of a whole true self. People don't always like to see cool perfect human beings. They like to see people shortcomings and flaws. It makes the social media relationship more relatable and personal. It makes them think they know the person behind the profile.

It’s not changing who we are, it quite literally defines who we are.

Your videos are so good at night for some weird reason, I'm up at 2 am and usually I watch it while doing some late night work. Its just so peaceful compared to how overwealming videos are nowadays, please dont stop posting! <3

Technically speaking, everything has the potential to change who we are. That's just how the evolution of the self works, really.

social media has 100% reduced my self-esteem. I'm constantly subconsciously comparing and orienting myself against a bunch of representations of people while simultaneously avoiding interacting with people in real life..

The marker of adulthood is starting to become the moment you realize that phones are a big problem.

I have an extremely hard time maintaining a social media presence because I generally refuse to submit my identity to profilicity (not really an intentional thing- I just don't like putting on a persona), but in doing so I quickly feel invalidated because my authenticity is not valued in that context.

Bad and stupid people find no worthwhile identity outside of the artificial one they have online, being unaware it's something they've been assigned.
