Denzel (and the entire movie) was robbed at the Oscars. Such an underrated movie.

I had the pleasure of meeting/hearing Denzel speak at the African American Film Fest in LA and he talked about this scene specifically. He consulted with a brother from the NOI and he said how the guy said when he first met Elijah he couldn't stand up straight cuz he felt unworthy. That's why Denzel is hunched over and insecure. This man knows how to act.

Al Freeman did a masterful job. Literally a spitting image, mannerisms, and speech etc.

Such a brilliantly acted and directed scene. Malcolm is so wide-eyed with anticipation at the begin of the scene, like a child. When gets into Elijah's office, he, who towers over Elijah in height, is slumped over. When comes to Elijah, he's so overcome with gratitude, adoration and fear that he's not only moved to tears, but he can't even look him in the eyes until the end of the scene. So much intricacy, nuance and emotion here.

Imagine meeting the very being who not only saved your life but a being you revered and loved more than you loved yourself and then imagine feeling unworthy to be in that beings presence because of your past deeds. This scene if you where to believe in the tales spoken about God would be all of us if we were to meet him ashamed of our sin yet he stares at you and says even with all your past flaws says he still believes in you malcom fully submitted to his faith

I even get teary eyed watching this. He was overwhelmed with emotion. El Shabazz was no longer a European Americanized African man. He was liberated, decolonized, and emancipated. I would’ve cried too if I met the very man who freed my oppressed mind

Malcom x was very intelectual. When he argues with somebody you find yourself listening to him carefully although you may not agree with his ideas. He was a great man. Whoever killed him was a criminal a jealous a weak ridicilous person. RIP Malcom.

I still can't believe Denzel didn't win the award. Such a powerful wide range performance. A once in a lifetime role. You know exactly how overwhelming the emotion is for him when meeting what he thinks is an honest teacher of faith. He had so much knowledge gained yet so much more to learn. So sad his life was cut short.

What I like most about the Malcolm X movie is the way it shows his metamorphosis, changing from a thief and a drug dealer to a man of God. I'm a sucker for stories like that.

Denzel perfectly displays how overwhelming it would be to meet the man who was not only responsible for transforming your entire identity and lifestyle but who you also believed to be divine. How impossible it would be to not only compose yourself but to even make eye contact. What performance!
