In gypsy jazz they do a downstroke every time the string changes, otherwise it's all alternate picking. The point is to apply more force to get the proper tone from the unique guitar. Similarly, it can often be a sweep motion!

Also, it’s very helpful to use the neck pickup for a fuller, cleaner sound, don’t use it until you can sweep pick decently with the bridge pick up. It will force you to play cleaner without the extra help of the neck pickup!!!
