Very informative John, you definitely make things a lot clearer to understand than a bunch of forum people who have only limited knowledge and argue what they don't know

Thank you for just laying the facts out about mixing!! Hope you eventually made it to FL!! Great job keeping things basic and fun. I'm using you to help pass down cichlid information in their digital world 😎

Haven't even watched the whole video through yet (I will), but I just needed to say THANK YOU! When I put together my last aquarium I wanted to mix certain cichlids from different lakes and the seller said it couldn't be done. He was such snob about it having to be lake specific fish, and that the habitat had to be juuuust right, that I ended up leaving the store to go someplace else. I found my fish elsewhere, and it went just fine. Despite mixing not only different cichlids, but different fish types altogether, creating niches in the aquarium that supplied the different needs of the fish species, keeping peace.

While I agree, that while getting your first aquarium it's less of a hassle if you keep yourself lake specific, once you've had a couple of aquariums and spent hours marvelling and studying different behaviours, you get a feel of what will work. Sometimes it doesn't pan out, by all means. But sometimes it's just because of the specific individual, not the species.

I'm just really happy that you brought up that you *can* mix, because when know-it-alls tell a beginner they can't do it because it's not like that where the fish come from, they might end up killing the interest in the bud. And it's such a shame, because fish (cichlids in particular) are extraordinary.

I found out that having plants and large rocks for them to run around and hide helps. Keep up the good work brother your input has always been appreciated 👍

Almost 4 years later and still great stuff. Starting my first one a 120g end of August with Peacocks and Haps and now may throw a few Mbuna 's in there. I know you don't have the store anymore wish you did. I'd have you help stock it. Anyway love your Videos and looking forward to part three.

Great video!! I have Mbunas and Peacocks mixed together in my 135 gallon tank, but I'm probably going to setup another and split them up. Looking to breed them and ensure they don't cross breed. Thanks!

hello john, I've been on forums, many says that you can't mix lakes. I know they're wrong, in my personal experience, I agree with you, we can do that. Many of my fellow aquarist do that. I think you have to start your own forum to tell everybody about our arguments

Hi John love ur videos. u have inspired me to keep african cichlids. I have Malawi and Tanganyika mix. following your strategy I've kept my Mbuna's smaller than other tank mates and as my strategy added Venustus and everyone is fallen in line as the Venustus in my tank is the tank boss. By doing so my Frontosa's are never bothered

Tremendous videos and quite entertaining. I am hobbyist and keep 11 Lake Malawian cichlids in a 60 gallon tank. When I first started, I paid very close attention to my filtered tap water parameters before selecting fish. My tap water has a pH that ranges from 7.4-7.6 and is rock hard. With minimal buffering and some crushed coral I can easily maintain pH 8.4 and a kH and gH above 10 degrees. Sounds like a great start for Malawian Mbunas, right? This is before I added one fish. Why don't you discuss water parameters in these videos? Thanks for the videos and keep up the great work!
