Drilling holes into floating shelves can be difficult without a large drill press or other specialty tools. A simple to make jig can help you keep the holes straight into the middle of the shelf and at a right angle.

This is exactly what I needed. I am trying to mount a 2x10 using Amazon bought hardware and I tried making a sled for the drill with the long bit (12”) and the angles were just off. Thank you so much for posting this! I’ve watched 10s of videos but this one solves it.

Love how simple this is. I've got to drill 10" holes into an oak shelf. With this method I can drill the holes, then scribe the back to match the wall and chisel out space for the mounting plate to be hidden.

One thing, surely using the metal drill guide on your bench would be better to create your jig and it's as hard to carry as a square

Did you have to use a router so it flush mounts to the wall. To make up for bracket thickness

How do you know exactly what thickness of bit to drill with?
