Why Do Phones Slow Down Over Time?

Ever wondered why your phone seems to slow down as it ages? Seemingly just in time for the manufacturers ceo to jump on stage and announce the new model that supposedly changes everything. In this video we’re going to look at some of the main reasons why phones slow down over time.
Please do subscribe if you haven’t already, it really helps this small channel grow.

The first reason is software updates. As companies release new versions of their phones operating systems, these updates may introduce new features and optimizations. These new features are built to take advantage of the increased hardware specs on the latest and greatest models. This means they require more resources, which might cause older lower spec phones to run slower as they struggle to keep up with the demands of the latest software.

Another cause f an old phone slowing down is battery age and degradation. As your phone's battery ages, it may not hold its charge as effectively as when it was new. In response to this, companies introduced power management features in the operating system to prevent unexpected shutdowns on devices with degraded batteries. These features can throttle the device's cpu and other resources to maintain stability, which can make the device feel slower than when it was new.

Accumulation of apps and data are another cause of slowness in old devices. Over time, your phone accumulates more apps, photos, videos, and other data. Many apps run processes in the background which can take up resources needed for other things and leave the phone feeling slow. Apps and data accumulation consumes storage space, potentially slowing down the device, especially if the storage is nearly full. This was much more of an issue in older electronics using the regular spinning hard drive but can still have a small impact on todays phones using flash storage. When storage space is limited, the operating system may struggle to manage and access data efficiently. This can lead to slower read and write speeds, especially when the system needs to retrieve or store new data.

Which device have you seen the biggest slowdown in over time and what do you think caused it? Let me know down in the comments and please do subscribe if you’ve enjoyed this video and thanks for watching!

my iPhone Xs Max is 6 years old running iOS 17.5 and it's still running well but I need to change the battery 🔋

I'm always very miserly with resources - I like my devices clutter free and as fast as possible, so I live within the device limits for RAM and storage. Also stick to best practice for li-ion battery longevity. Generally speaking, I just don't see this dramatic 'slowing down' over time very much. And proven it over and over with work devices of the same spec issued to me and my colleagues. Theirs are a sluggish cluttered mess while mine are still flying 🤷‍♂

I see all these problems at ALL Windows, Linux, Android and Iphones, but not on Symbian old devices (devices with 12 years or more)... and, until now, I have no "engineering explanations" why.

...I believe its some kind of "tricky technology" like old videogames keep doing great but new "social status" consoles are failuring miserable trying to be good options.

It's all just time that all my s20 plus served me like a champ all the way until I upgraded it to an s24 ultra. I plan on getting a 1tb s tab 10 and a nice sd card. Gonna transfer all my data to it and let the old boy drift in retirement.
