you're trying too hard at your job | how companies brainwash us into overworking

Sometimes I find myself losing sleep over my 9-5. I initially took on this job to pay my bills and live comfortably, but I often get caught up in the pressure of my high-stress work environment and end up burning out. Although a lot of us tend to do this, I don't think this is natural. In this video, we're chatting about how companies take advantage of employees' fear of being replaced, brainwash us into being loyal to the company, and cause us to normalize exhausting work habits for the sake of 'delivering results.'

But wait! If you work hard your company family will appreciate you and reward you! ... with more work.

A wise man once told me, some companies will expect marriage loyalty while treating their employees like Tinder relationships.

My uncle gave me a bit of a wake up call while in college by telling me "It's good that you're a hard worker but even an ox can work hard. And when it gets too old to keep working or dies nobody cares. They just replace it with another ox and carry on."

My biggest mistake: taking my jobs too seriously. In the end, it always boiled down to who liked me, not my work productivity, not my intelligence, nor my education. It boils down to who likes you and who doesn't like you. Being likable is the most important factor in being an employee. If you have to constantly be a contortionist to be liked then who are you really, and do you like yourself?

I am no longer ashamed to admit I do the bare minimum at work. Now, I do good work but I do not go above and beyond and I do not work a minute over 9-5. My job is just a means to an end at this point. I used to overwork myself for very little reward so I decided to stop and just take my 9-5 for what it is, as a job so I can pay my bills. I couldn't care less about competition.

I always tell people “I’m just here to make my money, I don’t care about the bonding”

I once got pulled into my office for not conversing with my coworkers. Like Mam I came here to work and that’s all🙄

US work culture is a bit toxic to say the least, the amount of people I meet who were too afraid to take time off, or go on vacation is insane...

My parents own their own business. They sleep in until 8 am and start 10 am. They close at 7PM. They are never stressed. Tired for sure, but never stressed. I don't believe any job should ever cause you stress, if it does, get out

I'm a simple employee: Pay me well, don't micromanage and respect my availability.

I'm already self motivated and perfectionistic, so thats why I hate "morale boosters" and forced team bonding.

My turning point was getting the news at my 9-5 job that my mother had just passed away. And as I’m processing what has happened and crying in the managers office she came in and asked me “so are you not going to be able to finish your shift worked a 9-5 since.

My job has this cool benefit. If I do my job really well....I get to do other people's jobs too. Find something you're passionate about and find a way to make a living with it. Work for your dreams, not for somebody's profits.

as someone who’s been laid off from a corporation after working myself into the ground (with no benefits) because i thought it would get me promoted, loyalty to any job in a capitalist structure is useless. view your job as expendable as they view you.

Society is controlled by fear. We wake up everyday for jobs we usually don’t like out of fear of not having enough of money, in turn giving the money value, which is actually worthless. 🙃

I do just enough not to get fired. It’s not worth it trying to climb up the corporate ladder.

As my mum told me, when I started my first fulltime job: "Don't overwork yourself. Noone will thank you for it." Guess what happened and who was right in the end...

I’ve even contemplated suicide because of my job. This seriously can’t be life to wake up do the same thing every day for 50 years and die.

Despite the nice coworkers I've known while at a job, I have NEVER had a friendship with any of them after either I or they left the company. I just don't think "making friends" is the purpose of your day job.
