Why Is The Moon Moving Away From Earth?

Have you ever looked up at the moon and wondered if it would ever move away from Earth? Well, you're not alone. And the answer might surprise you: the Moon is moving away from us. Scientists have been studying this phenomenon for decades, and the reasons are fascinating. Let’s dive into the question on everyone's mind!
---
Before we get into the science behind it, let's take a quick look at the history of our moon. One of the prevailing theories is that the Moon formed around 4.5 billion years ago, shortly after the formation of the solar system. The current leading theory suggests that the Moon formed from debris left over after a Mars-sized object collided with Earth, sending debris into space that eventually coalesced to form the Moon. This collision would have had a profound impact on Earth, likely causing massive disruptions to the planet's climate and geology.

Reasons Why Moon Moves Away from Earth
So, why is this happening?
The answer lies in two main factors: the Moon and Earth rotation and the gravitational interaction between the Moon and the Earth.

If Moon escapes Earth
It is important to note that this scenario is highly unlikely to occur anytime soon. The Moon is currently moving away from the Earth at a rate of about 3.8 centimeters per year, but it would take billions of years for it to move far enough away to escape the Earth's gravity altogether. Nevertheless, let's consider the hypothetical consequences of the Moon's disappearance.

Most people don't understand the gravity of the situation. 🌜

He said the same thing so many times that I kept thinking I'd bumped the screen and caused it to rewind.

Scientific videos with subtitles are god sent for people that have English as their second language(like me!) Thank you sir. Great video.

The Moon is moving away from Earth because Earth rotates more quickly on its axis than the Moon rotates about it.
This results in the tidal bulge on the Earth's surface being dragged ahead of where it would otherwise be, that is, it's ahead of the moon in its rotation about the Earth. This bulge minutely pulls the Moon forward in its orbit, giving it a slight acceleration, if an object is accelerated in the direction that it orbits, it will move outwards.

For similar reasons the Martian moon Phobos is moving closer to Mars.
Phobos moves about Mars faster than Mars rotates on its axis, so the tidal bulge on Mars moves across the martian surface slightly behind Phobos in its orbit, pulling back on Phobos, slowing it down. Slow an object in orbit down and its orbit will move in, towards its primary.

Youtube's adblock policy is driving the moon away.

i suppose moving further away is better thank moving closer to Earth.

4:25 "The Moon has moved about 384400 km from the Earth since it first formed". That makes it sound like the Moon has moved out that distance in total, rather than what is actually the case, which is that the Moon has moved out TO that distance away from the Earth. Pedantry, maybe, but sometimes it's necessary.

That would be hard for the cow to jump over. She jumped over once before

Obviously, the moon has seen enough of stupid humans, and is moving to a better neighborhood.

I would move away to looking at how bad earth is getting

I thought the sun only had 5 billion years left so by the time the moon escapes gravitational field the earth will be dead anyway.

Did anyone else notice the strange object in the picture of the moon at the 1:33 mark. Pause the video and zoom in a bit.

The moon's hollow and it's a spaceship it's getting ready to leave. Thousands of years ago the Romans said there was no moon. It just showed up.

It's because Luna doesn't like us anymore.

Holy Space 1999. Earth without a moon is too horrible to even consider!

Why is the Moon moving away? Chuck Norris is mad at it. When Chuck is mad at you, you don't ask why? You leave!

Tidal forces between the Earth and the Moon...the Moon's pull slows down the Earth's rotation as the Earth's pushes the Moon outward in it's orbit.
