Technically, Alduin expected you to be on his side. That's why he saves you from execution, protects you through your whole run through Helgen, and only leaves once you successfully escape the Imperials. Even when you fight your first storyline dragon, it targets the NPCs first until you attack it. Then, when it dies, it says "Dovahkiin, You are their kiin. Their kind. Their blood and soul. They loved you, and you slaughtered them.
