Excessive rust is an ugly sight. To cure our Caprice of this ailment, we physically cut out the rusty panel, ground out any corroded spots, and replaced it all with some new metal.

Those little tack welds every inch or two is a welding procedure called bridging. It allows the heat of the weld to dissipate throughout the metal with alot less chance of warping or the weld falling thru from to much heat buildup.
I learned that procedure from a 50 year old Boilermaker back in 1988. That man taught me more in two weeks about welding than any other single person in my life

I was taught to spot weld it, but keep jumping around until they all connect, keep heat down but still gets a full weld the whole way. Then grind and fill.

Ah, power nation. The shows that raised me. I didn't know when I was young that all these shows were 28 minute commercials for new automotive products. But I did learn a lot watching them.

Great weld. Not too sure about that rust treatment. Best remove it all.

Pro tip. Use a "scratch awl" tool on the paint marker line and follow the scratch. I get precision cuts

Grinding the tack down with "blunt" grinding disc releases the tension in the tack. Every tack "shrinks in" after it cools down, so that shrinkage tension must be released.

Welds on the back-side of the new panel can’t be painted.
Spray the new cavity inside with a water dispersant product. Something that won’t dry up and peel over time will protect the heat affected areas.

These jobs are real simple when you have every tool known to man and the shop ready to go
