With enough passion and practice, becoming a slam poet is within your reach. Explore a distant memory on paper, then read it out loud. Edit. Try reading it out loud again, and add your finishing touches. Gayle Danley offers five steps to being a slam poet -- while being downright poetic in the process.

Lesson by Gayle Danley, animation by TED-Ed.

Does anybody realize that this whole "lesson" can be considered a slam poem? :)

This animation gave me the chills - the chills let me know that whatever I have just witnessed was touching and beautiful.

When you're here because your teacher said "You're all going to write slam poetry and perform it in front of the class."

What a voice for the narrator! Makes me think of the woman that actually came to my high school and hosted a poetry slam. One of my finest memories, of my last day of high school.

Hope everyone who's lowkey being forced to perform slam poetry will do swell. In the end, it's all about what you feel and how you feel it. For some enchanting and top-tier slam poets, I would recommend Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye. They're wonderful!

I'm only here because my english teacher's making us all do these, in front of four classes at once and the lunch crowd.

please remember that expression of one self in art in any form is art.
Look at it as such and whether you like it or not, whether you find fault in the grammar or not, whether you understand it or not, it is art and don't tear it down because you don't get it.
let it be what it is.... ART!!!

I've always been good at poetry but when it comes to poems for poetry slam to me seems very intricate, its like a whole new level of poems

I thoroughly enjoyed the creative writing workshop video on writing prompts! The presenter's engaging style and practical examples really resonated with me. The prompt "If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?" was particularly intriguing. It sparked my imagination and encouraged me to think about the possibilities and consequences of such a power. I appreciate how the video provided both structure and flexibility, allowing me to explore different angles and perspectives. Overall, it was a great reminder of the power of prompts in sparking creativity and helping me push my writing boundaries.

Lol, thanks for the video though it was a bit meta. I'm a total beginner trying to learn how to be a poet, but the video itself was a slam poem so I couldn't understand it!!
I'm going to try something else besides TED-ed. Perhaps its because I'm not smart enough, but I find all of TED-ed's videos to be Esoteric, confined to and understandable by only that enlightened inner circle.

I AM BAFFLED at how disrespectful people on these threads are. Flava is slang. We ABSOLUTELY can break linguistic rules we understand and teach. Gayle Danley has been in the business about educating children for over 20 years. Your restrictive, one size fits all, offensive and assumptive educational tips to a highly educated educator who has been in the teaching business for decades is NOT useful. A question might be why you believe this woman on a TED talk doesn't know the difference.

Thanks for sharing this. I lost my Father last December and have been writing ever since. I have just started a YouTube channel with some of the poems I have written. It is so cathatic to write! :)
