Installing Stair Stringers with Simpson Connectors

I’m going to use these Simpson stringer connectors for the stairs in this warehouse.

First, I measure down and mark the height of where I want the stringers to land.

Then I mark off their spacing from left to right.

Next, I install the connectors using joist hanger nails.

I screw a pressure treated 2x4 to the concrete at the bottom of the stringers- this helps to hold them in place and makes the install easier.

I staple sill seal to the bottom of the stringer where it contacts the concrete.

Once the stringers in place at the bottom, I fasten it to the connector at the top.

The connectors are adjustable- you just bend up the bottom and add one fastener.

I like using these connector screws for a job like this- it goes so much faster.

The bottom is secured with deck screws.

I repeat the same process for the next three stringers.

They ended up being about 13” on center- which will be super strong.

Finally, I cut some braces the same width as the stairs- 42” wide.

These temporary braces help to get all the bows out of the stringers and hold everything in place until I get the risers and treads go on.
Everything turned out straight and level and all lines up.

Be sure to like and subscribe to see us build the rest of these stairs. @hausplans

Of all the videos of skilled framers, this one impressed me. This is the kind of work we did 60 years ago. Top notch 👏

Holy crap, a builder is actually using hangers. What a concept! Most don't. But should.

I don’t know much about house building or construction but y’all’s videos are so quality. Love to see them and there’s always something to learn from them. 👍🏻 thanks

Sill seal on the bottom of the stringer is a pro move

Those connectors look great ! I have always strapped my stringers, but never liked doing it because the thickness of the strap would hold the stringer that same thickness off the landing . Much better idea on these connectors!

I was never good at math, but it’s nice to see someone who is, and applies it to their everyday work. Couldn’t be me tho 😅

That impact driver sure is a multi tool that can be used as a hammer haha. Great video, learning how to do this as I'm preparing to build a deck.

It's amazing what Lisa Simpson invented but then again she always was the clever one. 😊

I need to see how the space between rough top step and rough floor is figured. Thx!

Great job!
Only one critique, I want to staple some of the foam seal under the pressure treated 2 x 4 too.
I was always taught that to porous surface or not supposed to come in contact with each other.

You should have Cy out for an inspection, I wanna see him react to good construction for once!

Real shallow rise there. Is it going to include a cargo stairclimber?

Great clean job! Alternatively you can also set the stringers on your 2x4 and place flashing metal or tape under the 2x4 that has contact with the concrete. The pad under the stringer is a good idea though. I mostly do this for outside approaches but it seams your inside so no rain. Just the concrete. Nice! 👍🏽

We used the straps the plywood and other wood came wrapped in. They are super heavy-duty and free. You had to predrill them because they were so thick.

For a shop, I like wide supported stringers. Nice to supporting the weight to go up .. or down

I'm using these on a small pool deck. I already have the #9 SD connector screws (used on joists) but it didn't make sense to me how these would mount flat if I used them. Duh - just ordered the N10 DHDG nails. Thanks for helping out a novice.
