Flat-rate pay is a massive mistake. Mechanics across the industry are quitting in record numbers—and it's easy to see why. This outdated system punishes hard-working techs during slowdowns while rewarding companies with more profit and zero accountability. In this deep dive, I break down:

✅ The history of flat-rate pay and how it works
✅ Why modern implementation is worse than ever
✅ The insane cost of tools that mechanics are forced to cover
✅ The GIG Economy
✅ How corporate greed, hedge funds, ESG, and DEI policies are hurting blue-collar industries
✅ Why fair compensation and company equity should be the goal

This is one of my longest videos yet, but I encourage you to watch it all the way through—because if you work in this industry, you understand the pain first hand.

Is there any type of movement, petition even a strike to get these manufacturers and dealership attention. Flat rate is so outdated and scam once the “time” can be increased if it’s cash pay.. everything is warranty because we are FIXING manufacturing error and defect. My friend is a service advisor who make way more money then a tech who’s been turning wrenches for 10 years now.

Receiving adequate, affordable healthcare would soften the blow. But not having it, combined with inflation, low wages, makes it crushing. Also add to this that much of US manufacturing takes place in poorer countries (like China). It's the petro-dollar that's keeping everything together, barely. And what about the billions and billions, in aid, military supplies, forgiven "loans" to countries like Israel? We'll cut Medicaid and food stamps to Americans, and yet never hold back a pre-budgeted penny for that country. It's crazy.

If you can, get out of that part of the country. It's like a third world country Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky. Just garbage economy and you are going to keep getting the same results. I'm in Washington State and the kids at McDonald's are making $800-$1000 a week. And the Cost of living isn't that much higher.
