I’m excited to bring to you 10 JRPGs that have aged incredibly well. These are games that came out 20+ years ago that still hold up today. You can go back to these games now and they rival any experience you’d have with modern games right now. I love the classics and while some of them are practically unplayable these days, the one’s on this list are perfect to jump into if for example you just started to get into JRPGs and wanted to go back and play some of the older games

From the perspective of time and as a person who has been playing Jrpgs for 30 years, I see that timeless works like Chrono Trigger can only be created with a confluence of many circumstances and great figures involved in the project.

I would add Dragon Quest III, even before the recent HD2D remake. It’s so refreshing to see an open world RPG that lets you figure things out without holding your hand, and it’s not excessively long. I think it’s in the running for best game on the NES, nevermind just RPGS. And it hold up immaculately.

This was the motivation I needed to get into Ys. Also I think FF9 also holds up incredibly well. Also terrenigma, paper Mario thousand years door, suikoden 2, and persona 3 and 4.

I played Chrono Trigger for the first time 2 years ago. Can confirm, it aged amazingly well. Was such a fun game!! Same with Trails in The Sky, played FC and SC 2 years ago (first trails games) and they were AMAZING!!

Happy to see the Fire Emblem GBA games here; it's what I started with back in the day so I'm bias to them. But seeing someone who DIDNT start with them, say that they aged well? Amazing!

Really need to play the Ys one. I remember seeing 7? on the vita and thinking it looked great but never actually got around to getting it. Fast forward to, you guessed it, 2 years ago haha, I played Ys VIII and LOVED it! So I really need to go back to the older ones to try them out!

I AM happy they're remaking Sky 1st so more people can play it but I really do think the game holds up amazingly well, like to the point where if it wasn't an availability thing I wouldn't even think a remake was necessary

Great list!! I agree that these are some truly timeless games. I could think of a few others. Persona 4 for example, maybe tactics ogre.

Good choices all, but I’m always sad that my own favorite retro RPG with endless replayability, Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen on SNES never makes these lists.

This was a fantastic list, Im personally really looking forward to the Trails in The Sky remake as I never played the series. Also Im currently playings Y’s X Nordic as my first Ys game. Ys Felgahana looks right up my alley.

I really really wanna get to Chrono Trigger one day cause it’s been sitting in my list for years now 😅.

Oath in Felghana is interesting because the overall pace and stuff is solid but those bosses left me very bothered but other than that it was really fun to experience. It was such a culture shock compared to YS8-9’s length.

To this day I still would like a blitzball standalone game, I spent way too much time on that minigame, it was so good.
