The Sonic fans see the acquisition as a potential downgrade.

The Angry Birds fans see the acquisition as a potential upgrade.

But what will really happen, only time will tell...

Fun fact: Angry Birds is still available for purchase on the PS Vita.

Sega made a lot of good acquisitions over the years, when they bought Atlus, Creative Assembly and other studios and IPs. Sega has grown steadily since they left the console business. I think people usually associate the disaster the Sonic franchise has been in the last decades, that the franchise shrunk instead of growing, like Sega as a whole is doing poorly. Most people have no idea that Sega is way bigger now compared to the days that they had consoles and Sega is richer than a lot other famous big publishers. Probably, they did not bought Rovio because of the Angry Birds IP, but because they have plans for investing in growing in the mobile gaming market and they wanted to buy a big studio to have more infrastructure.

I don’t think it was necessarily a mistake, as I have a lot of ideas about what they could do with the franchise. But they did spend way too much money

They made some money from Frontiers and was like, "we got money to throw away. Let's do that 😅"

So far, the only thing we know is that SEGA has a surprisingly good record when it comes to buying studios (Atlus, Relic, Creative Assembly, etc). So we have a reason to be optimistic about the future.

Seeing the list of Angry Birds spin-offs between 2009 and 2015 really took me back. My current love of Star Wars was fueled by Angry Birds Star Wars, and Space had it and Space had the really cool level design.

It is not a awful deal. This is a perfect deal. They will teamwork to bring back some OLD Angry Birds franchise. These games are very nostalgia

Small reminder, but the sonic mobile games have been filled with microtransactions since they were on smartphones, everything this tiny raccoon is afraid of has already happened.

Sega wants to do more mobile game stuff, so buying a company that makes successful money-making mobile games is the way to go. Plus with Sega in charge, maybe Rovio will be forced to make something else other than the 7 Angry birds themed games that're currently in development.

I'm both a huge sonic fan and angry birds fan so seeing this news is already scaring me

Knowing SEGA, it's likely they'll revive the games that have been removed from the app stores and put them into collections.
Angry Birds Space anyone?

The only thing I ask if Sega goes through with this, is that they must make chao garden for mobile.

I just want to add a few things you may have missed as an Angry Birds fan. When Rovio Classics: Angry birds first released, many fans criticised it for it’s many bugs and inaccurate physics, as well as the many missing fan-favourite episodes. Also, many of the original fan-favourite games like Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Star Wars 1 and 2 have been delisted for other, copyright-related reasons.

I think most angry birds fans are excited, because of what sega can do for angry birds.

Angry Birds is such a nostalgic franchise for me. I was there in it’s formative years and I played the hell out of all the games from the first one up until Angry Birds 2.

The Angry Birds Universe just has so much potential, it is just sad how rovio is money-oriented only.

Sega: "Y'kniw, we have some BIG tie-ins with Hatsune Miku, maybe we can buy her & maybe use her more."

Also Sega: "Funny birds go brrr"

Sega buying Rovio is a W as long as Tencent doesn't get it. Mobile gaming is a cash cow no matter how you look at it and micro transactions fund Triple A's.
Now we all know SEGA's history of being hit and miss with Sonic, and they are trying their hardest to keep fans from hating the new Frontiers mechanics. Best bet if it goes through would be to leave Rovio to what they're doing for a bit when they acquire.
SEGA takes their publisher's cut, kick Rovio in the knee when they misbehave, and when the dust settles and everything goes well, get a little Angry Birds Anniversary collection for consoles going. All could be relatively easy to push out while funding development for the next SEGA IP.

Awful deal??? An amazing deal. They can now control what rovio does with thier games, meaning that no more awful angry birds puzzel games.

I actually think people are looking way to into this, coming from a guy who is a fan of both franchises and I think once the deal starts to come in place people will start to appreciate it more.
