Hippies. The word seems to provoke people one way or the other. There are so many comments on my channel regarding people who "hate" hippies although mostly, what they are talking about, isn't about hippies at all. The hippies my team found when we were making our television series on the 1960s for primetime PBS (it aired on TV in 1991) were not political. They avoided politics. They also avoided for the most part cities. They were part of the counterculture. They mostly lived in the countryside. They provoked a national interest in organic food etc. Smoked dope for sure. Did a lot of other strange things and probably for the most part had loose free sex relationships. But they weren't the ones who for example, spit at returning Vietnam soldiers at the various airports of the United States. A very small group of political radicals did that who were aggressive and sometimes violent. Hippies had philosophies which many just went along with but some created. Aggressive behavior was disapproved of even if only spoken. Hippie clothing was unique. Fabrics were "natural". Art was very flowery some of the time. Travel through America and traveling the world to other hippie centers was a part of life. When the city got too hard, you went to the countryside. There were many hippie behaviors based on values and ethics and then repeated by people who wanted to be part of the community. Was it a cult? Some of the time. Was it a movement? Some of the time. Was it just teenagers not wanting to grow up – having a good time – living off the land or off mommy and daddy's money? Some of the time.

I interviewed many hippies or as some of them call themselves "x hippies" for my television series and for other films that I have made and most like that they were part of that generation and that movement. Some became practicing born-again Christians. Some became farmers. Some became stockbrokers and businessmen. Some teachers and social workers. To categorize their actions after the 60s as any one thing is incorrect (such as that they are all greedy business people today).

I am very proud of the TV series I made for PBS called Making Sense of the Sixties. I had the chance to spend a year examining my youth and how I became an active member of the 60s generation. If you are from that generation or a child of the 60s, I think you would find the entire series of value.

Here is a quote from Hesiod in the 8th Century BC “I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint"

Lsd didn't change me, it did give me a very profound glimpse the absurdity of our culture and the lives we live and how most of us take ourselves way to seriously.

The best way I can describe it is, your sense of self falls away. Your ego falls away. All of a sudden you become the viewer, and you're just watching everything happening around you in real time, and it's almost overwhelming at times. Without the ego, all the human trivial crap is meaningless. That's the best way I can summarize my experience with LSD.

LSD isn't for everyone. Anyone who has signs of mental instability should steer clear of it. Im 70 now and it's been a very long time since I tripped, and the one thing that it did to me was changed how I viewed the world. I wanted the big job, big house, the beautiful wife and a sexy fast car. After LSD I put those desires behind me, and became a craftsman with a modest house and a pickup truck. My wife has more brains than beauty, and together we raised two really good people

1971 here. acid opens your eyes, and while on it you think you actually just solved life’s issues, but by the next day it’s all forgotten and back to just thinking about life instead of doing anything about it.

All jokes aside. When the CIA concluded their psychedelic experiments, they noted that individuals who used them could not be controlled.

George Harrison: "That's the thing about LSD, you don't need it twice."

Interviewer: You only took LSD once?

George: "No, I took it lots of times. But I only needed it once." 😁

The first time I took LSD I felt that I was born again.

A few years after, I took some like I usually did every once in a while, I ended up in a mental institution and went through depression and had hallucinations and psychosis.

Be very careful people ☠️

Before LSD: Why is the stop sign red?
After LSD: The stop sign so beautiful, it says STOP, but it always lets you GO. If you love something you let it go and the stop sign knows this all too well.

Took mushrooms for the first time 10 months ago, realised how much I regret stopping boxing when I was a kid, decided I wanted to do a sport again and now have been doing Muay Thai for 9 months and started taking mma beginner classes a couple weeks ago. Best choices I feel like I’ve made in a long time. I’m fitter and more confident than ever. Crazy how it works, fully made me really want to change the direction my life was headed.

Taking LSD definitely broadens one’s view on humanity, animal life, plant life and most importantly while on LSD you realize who you don’t want to be.

I was a teen of the seventies who bought LSD from teens of the sixties. I knew one guy who became schizophrenic and a guy that jumped off a cliff while tripping, but the overwhelming majority of trippers had their minds opened and their world greatly expanded.
