PS4 Cooling System - How It Works - See it Working

The PS4 cooling system is pretty simple...in this video I show you exactly how it works. There are several important parts of the PS4 cooling system. The main component everyone knows about is the fan but the fan is only one small part in the cooling system. There is also a heat sink, an air chamber and cooling fins to cool the air. I show how the air is pushed through the console with the cooling fan, over the cooling fins and out the rear of the PS4 through the power supply.

Definitely would love to see a pro video man. Or any pro videos at all are cool. Thanks for making this!

I just watched this after seeing PS5 cooling solution. Although the general concept is the same, the little differences are remarkable.

thank you for your video !
it's clear and simple to understand.
It's amazing to see how engineers find solution to heat problems with those new powerful consoles.
I guess finding this specific fan in 2 or 3 years will be very hard, I guess...

So I was using my PS4 wrong the entire time, mine sits close to the left side of my desk, preventing some air from flowing gotta put it on the right side, the right side is the right one.
Thank you.

Do you think adding an exhaust fan to the rear of the unit, or alternatively, adding additional vents, would assist with cooling?
I noticed during teardown there isn't much in the way of exit strategy for the heated air being pushed over the psu, especially with the increased rate of the pro model.
My theory was to have an active exhaust opposite the io board to pull the heated air out independently of the apu cooler, or slotting for additional expelling area.

hey Steve, i love this type of video man, very interesting and informative, would you recommend dust filter covers ( home made or otherwise ) for either of the ps or xbox console air intake vents, or would that restrict air flow to much, thanks man.

I don't think the pressure / suction comment is right. Air will move in the direction that the blades are pushing it, drawing in air from elsewhere. These fins are designed to push air out through the circumference of the fan, leaving air to be drawn in from either side - although with the mounting, there is only one side open from which air can be drawn.

Without the top part of the case, it won't be able to draw air through the vents on the side, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that air can get into the case, and be drawn into the fan. Without the case, the fan can just draw the air in directly, not just what can get through the vents.

The bigger issue is the heatsink. By taking the metal plate off and exposing part of the heatsink, the air has somewhere to escape rather than being blown across the whole of the heatsink - removing the plate will (likely) have a detrimental effect on the cooling.

If the top cover was required to increase pressure and force air over the heatsink, then the pressure would also be forcing air out of the vents in the top, rather than drawing it in to feed the fan and blow across the heatsink.

The PS5 cooling design isn't that much different to this. Except the PS5 has a larger fan, is able to draw air from both sides of the fan, and has larger vents to allow more air into the fan.

Thank you for explaining! It is so imperative to know HOW these things work (or at least how they are designed to work).

This type of info will help me greatly in my quest of keeping my consoles in great working condition! :D

Ever sinse PS3, I've never found their enclosed cooling system that efficient imo. My PS3 & PS4 have modded vents where the fan is located. Makes a massive difference to it's cooling efficiency. Again, imo. :-)
