Master your Golf Takeaway with this Proper Golf Swing Checklist

The first sequence of the golf swing - the takeaway - is fundamentally important because it sets up the club for the rest of the swing. Make mistakes here and you’ll struggle to recover all the way through impact, and you’ll find it difficult to produce straight golf shots.

In this video you’ll learn the proper way to take your club back. The golf takeaway tips will explain what moves first, i.e., he hands, the hips, or the shoulders. You’ll also learn how to take the club back (inside takeaway, outside takeaway, or square takeaway). Finally, you’ll learn to check for the angle of the clubface to make sure it is not open nor closed.

Your golf takeaway - and your golf swing for that matter - should begin with your shoulders. It should not begin with your hips turning or with your wrists flicking the club. Bring your lead shoulder under your chin through a nice shoulder rotation. Your hands and wrists should remain passive during your takeaway.

At the end of the golf takeaway, when the club is parallel to the ground, you will want the clubhead to block the view of your hands if you were to stand behind the ball and looking straight at the target. That means that your club shaft is pointing straight forward, at the target. For an outside takeaway, your hands would be visible and the club shaft would point left of the target. For an inside takeaway, your hands would again be visible and the club shaft would point right of the target.

Another checkpoint is to look at the position of the clubface, again when the club shaft is parallel to the ground. Ideally, the leading edge of your clubface should match your spine angle, which means that it should point towards the ball slightly. If it points too much towards the sky then your clubface is open. If it points too much towards the ground then your clubface is closed. Get your clubface square by matching the angle of your spine, more or less.

Focus on these simple golf takeaway checkpoints in order to make sure you begin your golf swing on-line which will set you up nicely for the rest of your golf swing.

Great video with perfect technique, alot amature golfers make copy takeaway but don't know axactly technique details yet, so the drills in not constant when back swing and also cause issue for down swing. I saw many videos of Peter, i admire that you are professional golf teacher with alots knownledge axactly. Not so many people can make video and issue the books parrallel unless you have fundermental knownledge enough, Peter is the one you can do it.

In the one-piece take away drill you talk about having the top of the club in line with your belly on take-away. Here it looks like you come off that alignment as your start your backswing. At what what point is it okay for the back of the club to misalign with the belly? at the start of backswing?
