Well if you played Metal gear solid Snake Eater. Right before playing The Phantom Pain. You would remember When you rescue the Russian scientist Sokolov he mentions that Snakes speaks Russian perfectly. In the Phantom pain Venom has to get a russian soldier to Mother Base to translate Russian for him.

The reason why Volgin knew he wasn’t big boss is because Big boss has blue eyes and venom snake has green eyes. In mgs3 volgin said something along the lines of “I hate those blue eyes of your.” Volgin remembered snakes eye color from the interrogation scene in snake eater. That’s how much he hates Big boss.

At the very start of the game when the real Big Boss saves you from quiet, he says “who are you?” And gets the response “you’re talking to yourself”. Once you’ve played the game it’s really cool to see all the big and little cues of your real identity.

The level of dicking around in this game was godly!!! I was near 500 hours in, on pc, when a homie told me there was a whole new continent to travel too. I was blown away. To this day I am unable to load the game and properly finish it. I immediately go into dick around mode. 10/10. MGS5

If Metal Gear games weren't convoluted enough, Big Boss in MGSV:TPP was revealed not to be the actual Big Boss, but a brainwashed copy of real Big Boss. Except this is that Big Boss, who was giving orders, but then turned on Solid Snake in the very first Metal Gear game and was revealed to be the main villain, the evil mastermind behind everything and whom Solid Snake eliminated in the final duel.

Except, the real Big Boss is the main villain in the second canonical Metal Gear sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (excluding NES exclusive sequel Snake's Revenge, made without Kojima, later removed from main storyline, considered non-canon).

This reminds me of Robert Downey in the movie Tropic Thunder, playing actor Kirk Lazarus, saying: "I know who I am! I'm a dude, playing the dude, disguised as another dude!
