One small flaw in this theory, the act of being a horcrux itself does provide some measure of protection against damage. When Hermione is reading up on the Horcruxes Fiendfyre and Basilisk Venom she mentions as being among the few ways to destroy one (a Horcrux), this is heavily implying that simply being a Horcrux (At least for inanimate objects) provided the object some manner of protection or healing, that the vessel will have innate resistance and ability to heal itself, like a living being has the ability to heal from many wounds. The reason Fiendfyre or Basilisk Venon (among some other things) could destroy it is because it's cursed damage that cannot be healed except under specific circumstances. I'm not sure the heat emanating from the flagrante curse would count as cursed damage, I mean the trio get serious burns from it and they heal just fine afterwards without even any real medical intervention.

A horcrux couldn't just melt.
Voldemort put protective spells on his horcruxes, yes. But horcruxes are almost impossible to destroy even without extra protection. They have to be beyond magical repair, which simple melting wouldn't do.
