You know, honestly, the Diadem was probably one of the better hidden horcruxes. For someone who's not Harry who first of all knew of Voldemort's horcrux secret, it'd be one of the hardest to find. You not only had to gain entry into Hogwarts, but also had to actually know that particular Horcrux was the diadem. Then, you'd have to also somehow know it was hidden in the room of requirement, and further, you'd also have to have the means to locate it like Harry could because of his radar sense to all the Horcruxes.

The cave was a good one, but it was pretty straight forward, despite the obstacles. But the Diadem was so obscure, most people had thought the diadem had been lost for awhile.

Voldemort didn't put Ravenclaw's diadem on the bust of the warlock in the Room of Requirement. Harry did that in the sixth book to help mark the location where he hid the Half-Blood Prince's textbook inside the Room, unaware at the time that he had just stumbled upon one of Voldemort's horcruxes.
