Hello there. I am a blind YouTuber, and I believe I can assist here. Voiceover, (the talking feature), for those of us with visual impairments, has been around since the iPhone 3GS. Then, the screen curtain (the black/dark screen), was, introduced soon afterwards. The screen curtain has actually been available since iOS 4 In other words, you’ve been able to do this, (Secretly record videos), for a very long time. I may not have gotten the iOS version correct, (As far as the screen curtain is concerned; this feature may have been available before then.) Here’s a way to make the camera recording easy and simple, recording, with a dark screen. Three finger triple tap to turn on the screen curtain if you are in the camera app, three finger double tap to turn off speech. To begin recording either press the volume button, or do a two finger double tap to record the video. There’s no need to worry about the silent switch or anything like that.

Here's a silent method that doesn't require tricky triple tapping:

Prep Phone:
1.a. Pull down Right Side Window Shade.
1.b. Pull Brightness down to low. Pull Volume down to **zero**.
2. Go to Settings/ Display & Brightness/ Auto-Lock . Turn Auto-Lock to 'Never'.

Start Recording Video:
2. Go to Camera, select "VIDEO".
3. If will be driving a car (i.e. using phone holder), switch to Front Facing Camera.
3. Press red 'Record' button. "Bink!" will not sound.
4. Swipe DOWN window shade from upper RIGHT HAND corner. (middle or LH corner does not work)
5. DO NOT press power button / DO NOT turn screen off.

6. Recording continues normally.
7. Screen continues to show right-side window shade
8. Notifications will still appear, but will make no sound and will not stop camera recording.

To Stop Recording
8. Wipe UP from bottom of the screen to remove Window Shade.

9. Press red button to stop recording.
* DO NOT use power button to stop recording -- this will make a "Bink" sound.
10. Go to Home Screen

To Re-set Settings
11. Pull down Right Side Window Shade and increase Volume and Brightness.
12. Go to Settings/Display & Brightness/Auto-Lock. Turn Auto-Lock back to [x] minutes.

I turned on voiceover fir this had so much trouble unlocking with passcode and turning it off had to ask to turn off voiceover so many time didn’t work not doing this again gee thanks

Hey,
I am a voiceover user, you don’t have to turn the screen curtain off to stop recording, you can just triple click the side button or the home button and voiceover will turn off and turn off the screen curtain at the same time. The next time you enable voiceover screen curtain will automatically be turned on again.

It only worked for two seconds with screen off on ios 17.2 (Prescence of light Green Dot and home bar), and the camera app eject itself and stop recording. Although Thanks for sharing.

Great tip but if I want to record a game and the game goes for at least 1.5 hours can I do with iPhone? I don't want the phone to turn off or stop recording.

I will use this method in order to film staff workers in a restaurant or elsewhere who tend to be aggressive towards me because I didn't understood something!!! So that they can be fired of their job for good!

Didn’t work for me, nothing happens when you tap the screen also the guided voice thing just makes it really hard to scroll and kept locking my screen, just took me 5 minutes to navigate back to settings to turn it off!
