I use a 3/8 to a 1/4 ratchet adapter and clamp the drill on the 1/4 male end. The 3/8 female fits the pump shaft perfectly.

Yet another brilliant idea with the fuel pump! Shoot, I was thinking of using an old outboard engine primer bulb. I woulda been pumping on that thing for days. Once again, it pays to watch your videos. Jeez. Now why didn't I think of that. And you did gat a fine deal on that engine, even if it was left outside. A friend of mine had a 4-53 in a seine skiff. It filled with water and froze solid over the winter. Engine and all was a solid block of ice. He thawed it out, flushed it with diesel and put in new oil. It started like nothing ever happened. Thanks again for taking the time to upload these valuable videos. I'm going to go watch it again.

word of caution on factory are rated in only at 60% efficiency. Sugar, dirt and sand will still go through them, ive seen it happen. A primary, secondary system is a good defense against the issue, all vehicles/machines should be made that way. We have mining customers in Australia now that have been forced to buy filtered diesel (20 micron) from the petroleum terminal to keep their warranties with Hitachi and Komatsu.

Wow that is a slick way to prime the fuel system! I did that to the 3-53 I rebuilt and it fired right up for the first start! Now my question is, why do you run straight 40w in it? Can you run 15w40 diesel oil in these Detroit’s? I’m running a lighter oil for the break in process but plan on switching it up after the break in is done.

Need some guide studs in the end of the crankshaft 😀

I have a 3-53 and I need to do an engine oil and filter change, but ; I'm uncertain where the oil filler opening is on this engine ??!! I see you adding oil at the flywheel housing . I have a filler tube in the same location and I am not at all familiar with this engine . The engine is in a backhoe and the previous owner who was just a farmer who used it on occasion to tear out a few stumps, told me that he added oil through the valve cover breather cap. To get to the breather cap in this machine it is necessary to remove a hydraulic reservoir mounted on top of the engine or you can't take the breather cap off !! Can you assure me that the filler neck at the back of the engine is for the engine oil ???!!!
