The way we built 6 and 8V92's was once we had the cylinder kits built we would take the liner O-rings and soak them in 100% antifreeze(glycol). The material they are made of is designed to grow when exposed to glycol. Not more than 10 mins in the glycol then pitter patter to get the kits installed before the O-rings get too big. The glycol also acts as a super slippery lubricant. If you do it any other way, you risk not having glycol not in contact with the whole O-ring where its up against the block and liner, it can grow unevenly and create sealing issues.

Watching you put the cylinder assembly into the block prompted some more memories.... I remember when putting a 149 series liner piston & rod assembly into the block, we had this huge rubber “gob stopper” that fitted into the top of the liner. You did up a bolt in the top of it, and the rubber expanded to get a good grip on the liner, and you used that to hold onto it as you lowered the assembly into the block. Getting some really old memories coming back.

GM were ahead of their time using wet liners. The most unusual thing i have worked on is a wet/dry liner in a EA7-470 Mack. The top half of the liner is wet, and the bottom half is dry. I had one liner that needed the whole front end of a truck (4, 500kg) jacked up on the liner for pressure, and beads of weld down the inside to shrink it. 30 minutes later it had 'popped' and could be uninstalled. Interestingly all the other liners installed smoothly excepted the same cylinder as the difficult one. So, I got the liner straight from the freezer and sledge hammered it (under a block of wood) in quickly as possible before it heated up and expanded into friction fit. When measured the liner protrusion for all cylinders was perfect.

Great video Brother. I quit using Dawn dish soap because it's a petroleum product that will over time, desolve the o-rings. I use either dielectric grease or Astroglide you get at walmart. Please don't take my recommendation in a negative way. You've forgotten more than I'll ever know!

That 3-53 must've had some serious hours on it at one point in its life to have 20 under bearings. It will be well cared for now with you!

Do the notches on the rod bearing go on the intake or exhaust side? Or doesnt it matter?

All the inline engines have really robust bearings compared to the V's. Thanks.

I found your videos very informative. Presently i am doing a 353t cylinder head replacement due original crack and injector tube leaking. Can you tell me what precaution to take with water on the piston crown which seems some get into the air box. Sadly we already install the head but hasn't attempt a start.
