Welcome, my name is Phil, and in this video I discuss what brown dwarfs are.

Substellar objects known as brown dwarfs are larger than the largest gas giant planets but smaller than the least massive main-sequence stars. They are between 13 to 80 times as massive as Jupiter. They are not large enough to support the nuclear fusion of regular hydrogen into helium in their cores, but they are massive enough to produce some heat and light when deuterium fuses. Lithium may be fused by the most massive ones.

Their name is derived not from the colour of light they emit, but rather from the fact that their size falls between that of "dark" planets and white dwarf stars. Depending on their temperature, brown dwarfs would appear differently to the unaided eye. The warmest ones may be orange or red in color, but the human eye would probably see colder brown dwarfs as magenta or black.

I didn't know that the brown dwarfs would be confused for red dwarfs in some cases. Thanks!
