The fact that the cops think the SC is "out of touch" for this decision shows just how out of touch the cops are.

A person trying to avoid contact with law enforcement personnel should automatically be deemed sane and intelligent.

Police union bitching and crying that they cannot violate the rights of Americans.

"He just looks guilty" should never have held up in ANY of the lower courts.

Police shocked when they find out that you can't harass people for fun when you are bored.

If the cops don't like it - it's probably good

In the USA it's not illegal to "act werid". Acting werid can't be a method to lose your civil rights.

The Supreme Court in California sided with citizens and ruled in to favor of civil rights? How terrible! We need more rulings like this

California decided to require cops to obey rather than violate the US Constitution. (Require articulable suspicion of a CRIME being committed before detain/ID/arrest.) Why is that controversial?

The big problem is that cops claim
_everything_ is suspicious, and routinely grab and use force on pretty much anyone.

Why does the lower court believe that anyone has to engage with the police

Acting, "odd" or, "weird" is not a crime. The lack of any crime severely limits what a police officer can do. I avoid cops every time I have the opportunity. I am an old wyte man who has never been arrested, but I have seen enough of how cops operate to know that any contact or conversation with a cop will NEVER improve your life.

I’m a law abiding American. I avoid contact with law enforcement at all cost, avoiding them, in every way possible.

We had huge issues with this in Texas during my activist days in OCT. Cops would regularly get their feelings hurt that Texans had 2nd Amendment rights. So they did everything from trespassing citizens from public property, harassing them and demanding ID, to physically assaulting them (breaking arms, tazing) and having them drug up on trumped up disorderly conduct, resisting arrest or (my favorite) "interfering with the duties of a peace officer".
This is why I view Blue Lives Matter as just another flavor of BLM defending criminals.

So not wanting to "engage" with someone whose goal is to arrest you and put you in jail, whether you are guilty or not, is now "suspicious"?
Is not stepping in a visible bear trap "suspicious" too?

I used to wave to every cop I passed on the road, wanting them to know that much of the public supports them... until I got pulled over, humiliated, berated and made late to work for waving to a cop. One less member of the public now supports them. If they're in uniform, I avoid them for my own safety. I backed the blue until it happened to me.

So many arrests for "obstructing justice" or "resisting arrest" when, without police presence, there would've been no crime at all.

I'm in California! Yay! I'm both autistic and hard of hearing. I live in constant fear of cops thinking I'm acting weird or ignoring them. It's good to know the California Supreme Court made this decision. Thanks for this very helpful information.

Those police violated the man's 4th amendment rights. Period. That fact alone makes the "Outstanding policework" done here against the law. Are lawbreakers to be celebrated? Obviously not.
