The truth is, you're only hurting yourself by talking to the police. Why? Because you're handing over evidence and statements to the police. You have a Constitutional right to remain silent under the Fifth Amendment, DON'T be afraid to invoke it!

My fifteen year old got himself into some trouble about 4 years ago.

We refused to talk to the police and hired a lawyer. The police had little to stand on from our side.

my favorite part is where I’m being cooperative but keeping my mouth shut and the guy turns around says “so how many beers have you had?”. And I respond by laughing.

next thing I say, which I probably shouldn’t have “ Does that actually work on people who have been drinking?”

I had a cop try to get me to admit to manufacturing because I left a jar of flowering plant fertilizer for a friend of mine to use on flowering vegetable plants, and the neighbors decided it was methamphetamine. Cop tried the, "admit to manufacturing for sale and distribution and I'll see to it that you only get 5 years, otherwise, once the state lab proves it's a narcotic, I'll issue a federal warrant for your arrest and I'll make sure you get the maximum 15 year sentence." I told him to hold his breath until that federal warrant came through. It's been a solid decade now, and I still haven't seen a warrant.
