Not only did Ned realize that Gendry looked like a young Robert, he also realized that Roberts genes were stronger than the yellow hair genes since Gendry’s mother was a blonde. I think this was the moment Ned realized Cersei’s kids weren’t Roberts.

Robert had black hair in the book and though Mark Addy’s was graying, the characters are older in the show and they’re still saying he had black hair basically. All of his bastards had his dark hair even if the mothers were blonde or red haired, which is why Ned is so suspicious that Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen all had the Lannister golden hair.

I like the theory that Gendry is actually true born and that he is the son of Robert and Cersei (his mother had yellow hair), and that Cersei was so disgusted by the fact that she’d actually given birth to Robert’s son, so she gave him away in secret and said she’d miscarried.

Making Gendry one of the true contenders to the Iron Throne.
