This is 100% true and has been for generations. My grandpa was a marine and then got out and chased some woman all over the country or something trying to win her heart and when that failed and he was broke and the marines had met their quota for enlisting the army offered to take him starting at the same rank he left the marines. He retired master Sargeant from the army.

This is honestly heart breaking for me to think about cuz for some troops that's literally all they know and they can't transition into civilian life so they just keep going until they can't anymore

At my last assignment, we had a guy cross train from the Marines to the AF around 2005-2006. He was senior enlisted, though I'm not sure of his Marine rank, he came to us as an E-7 to retire. We flew a lot together but he never spoke of what he did. Although it was very apparent that whatever he went through in the early days of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, clearly left him with some demons. Tough dude.
