Weed Eater Bike Made Simple- 27cc Motorbike Done on the Cheap

Built in 2 afternoons, the weed eater bike proves that transportation doesn't have to be expensive. Going over 20mph, it is perfect for short commutes. I plan to install an odometer to track how far it goes.

EDIT: Hey guys, you all are phenomenal to get this vid to 50k views! I have quite a bit of feedback from you guys on this bike and I had some plans for it. I realize now that the engine needs a tune BADLY, and I was going to fix that but I wrecked this bike and bent the wheel. I thought instead of get a new wheel, I would build a version 2 of this bike with a chainsaw engine and powered with a chain instead of friction!!! Sorry I did not follow up on this bike, it's just been out of commission. Still, you guys are amazing and not only do you support me but you give me advice on builds like this. Edited 6/24/19.

AWESOME! This is the kind of project I've been looking for. No fancy kits. No fancy electronics or devices. Just raw materials and stuff you can EASILY gets your hands on if you don't already have these things laying around!

A Consensus...

Problems with this design:
-Friction drive does not work when wet.
-The roller wears down the tire a lot.
-Drilled a hole in the frame which weakens it and it's not really safe.
-Doesn't have a clutch so it doesn't idle, meaning if you stop you'll have to restart the engine.
-Cheap bikes are wobbly.
-There's a lot of pressure on the crankshaft bearing because it is being pushed down on the tire.

Nonetheless, the bike looks neat and it has some impressive torque and straight line speeds. I used to take this thing down to the gas station frequently and buy sodas, and I got a lot of miles out of it and never had any reliability issues (the rear tire had quite a bit of wear on it). But use a better bike than a cheap Huffy. I got going 30mph and crashed and luckily walked away with minor injuries, but the bike did not survive. The steel frame had too much flex for those speeds, and the wheels were soft and had a lot of flex and play. Definitely use an aluminum frame and a quality bike. Also, I highly recommend welding a sprocket to the clutch on the engine and using a chain. You can't use the clutch with the friction drive design because any sideways force on the clutch will make it not work properly. Hopefully this experience helps some of you or was informative.

Thanks for viewing,
Parker

I used a heavy hide a bed spring to pull the engine down and used 3 pieces of 45 degree angle iron to mount the engine then used the rear brake caliper bolt hole to mount to the frame and the spring to one side of angle iron to the threaded holes meant for mud flapp by the derailuer mount. I had to use nylock nuts due to regular nuts shaking to pieces during the first run. Terryfying to be holding a screaming engine from the throttle cable as it swung all over luckily the gas tank rattled free and fell off the engine which made it run out of fuel quickly. It was like something from a roadrunner cartoon I swear

my mom when i was a teen. caught whiskey handle on my 78 PUCH maxi luxe (slow as the speed of smell) and rode it out full send, all the way around the house..right into the garage door. that woman missed the clothes line, all the crap in the yard, a tree and the neighbors fence...but managed the garage door. hilarious.

Sancta simplicitas. Very nice. No dangerous, costly, noisy high maintenance chains. 20 MPH is the maximal speed you can run safely an old bike with the original tires and brakes. The minimal motorized KISS bike, I love. An easy to make second silencer added to the original one would make a very quiet bike.

And this is the simplest method I've seen yet, I've got a 38cc Poulan chainsaw motor I'm gonna try it with. I have that almost exact troy bilt engine as well lol

That’s very cool 😎…..the French made a bike called Velo Solex with a drop down friction drive on the front wheel ( I own one built in Spain) . The motor pivots and there is a locking system . Ingenious to deflate the tire . Your mums a trooper !

I made one and put it on the front. There is no need for a throttle just run it all the way open. For engine controll you only need a kill switch. If your still rolling, let off the kill switch and it will take off again.

Im doing this just now. 54cc weed eater. Retaining the clutch and using an rear seat support for mounting the engine. Installing using the chain.

Hey good job. Trying to build 2 for my boys.
How do you keep your foot from striking to motor mount when you pedal to start?
