I would think the shopping carts got bigger over time because people only go shopping once a week or less with so many more people having cars and refrigerators than in decades past.
Maybe I'm wrong, but people in other countries and Americans in the past did their shopping on a daily basis so their food was as fresh as possible. Americans no longer do that with freezers and such.
