I think the two replies to my last comment indicate beautifully my problem: completely opposite advice! To be clear currently I carry a 5w and a 25 degree hybrid both of which are rather old. I hit my 3w 230-250 yards in summer off tee, 5w 215-225 off tee and hybrid 200-210 yards, off the deck you can knock 10-15 yards off each club. The 5w & hybrid are the last 2 clubs in the bag which I need to renew, hence I would like to see a comparison between 5w and similar lofted hybrid.

For me it is now a hybrid. When I was younger and had better swing speed, a long iron was my preference. I don't and struggle to hit my 3 and possibly 4 iron. My replacement is a 4 hybrid.

I'm carrying a Nike 4 Hybrid... But there are quite often strong winds on my course and I feel, at times, like a proper 4 iron would be better for keeping the ball low and getting strong roll when I'm playing into the wind... only to then appreciate the hybrid even more when on the next hole I'm playing WITH the wind and the high ball allows me to reach distances that make the hole easier...
Stops "dead" (well does roll a bit but that's rather negligible), too, so that's great for the distant greens...

Getting to this one late...ive just ditched my 4 iron for the Hybrid...the iron wasnt a bad club but for me you need to weigh up how often out of 10 would you hit it true and if its less than 5 you need to put the Hybrid in your bag. Im getting a great launch with this and it builds confidence rather than the lottery of pulling the 4 iron out of the bag. Totally agree the Hybrid has many functions that could be considered when using it as part of your set up.

Good thoughtful review, Andy. I carry 19, 22, 25 and a 28 degree hybrids because they suit my game. I am a slow swinging oldie and they give me height, distance and confidence. I use my 19 degree hybrid of the tee while my Driver swing is in hibernation.

You mentioned early that you use your driving irons on tight par 4s, so I would have thought one of the main tests between the clubs would have been about accuracy. It would have been interesting to see the dispersion results between the clubs.

Modern bag setup is even changing on the men's PGA tour - but for everyone else, when you weigh everything that is important on a golf course of scoring, you really should have 2 hybrids - the 18/19 degree loft and the 22/23 degree loft type spacing. These are sort of the 1/2 iron replacement and the 3/4 iron replacement - or for your average male decent non tour golfer, a 185-210 type club and a 215-240 type club. The are far easier to hit high and stop than long irons and they absolutely will help you score. With modern shafts / CGs face alignment settings, you can set them up so they won't go left (scoring club) or to run with a slight draw setup. More and more of the guys on tour are using at least one of them - that basically means most average golfers should have two of them.

What about high lofted fairway woods? Bit of a grampa vibe but really effective clubs. After years of trying to get comfortable with hybrids I’ve gone 4, 7 & 9 wood. The new Rogue fairway woods are unbelievably good. So much more consistent than any hybrid I’ve ever tried, easier to hit and longer. Bag looks like a traveling puppet show mind you

For me personally I carry a 3 and 4 hybrid. Because of the profile of my Adam's hybrids, I can take a shot at the green knowing the decent angle gives me the chance to hold the green. I can shorten the distance by gripping down, and I and change the follow thorough to flight the ball down a little. I gave up my 3 and 4 irons last year and am glad I did. The only place I don't like the hybrid is off the tee, where I prefer an iron or fairway wood.

Been using hybrids for years, no contest. Good video ;-)

Hybrids for me!! Tho I may be slightly bias as I've been gaming the Cleveland Launcher HB irons for a couple years now and it's as easy as it gets!!

I was playing a 23* 4 iron and 21* 4hybrid last year but I’m thinking of taking the hybrid out and replacing it with a long iron just cuz I strike the ball better with my irons. Not sure if it’s my swing but I get better flight and consistency with the irons.

Nice work. I like how you show what's good for your game as you say go out and test for yourself.

Off the deck I would choose hybrid all day, but with the luxury of a tee I seem to sky them and would opt for long irons if I could carry about 16 clubs, I can't so carry 24 degree hybrid and then into 27 degree 5iron.

Have chosen to go for 4 and 3 iron equivalent hybrid. Love them.

I think to add more questions should have added a 7 wood in to the equation. With your choice, I'd go with a driving iron over a hybrid. A hybrid more often than not goes left on me. Great video Andy.

I use 16 deg hybrid as 3 wood, and hybrids as my 6, 5, 4 and 3 irons as I feel far more confident with both strike and distance control.

Used a Cobra hybrid for a while. Super easy to hit out of different lies but l had a habit of hooking it when trying to hit it hard. Sometimes 40-50 yards offline. Just purchased a Srixon Z U65 utility iron. It is just fantastic and I'm not nearly so prone to hitting massive hooks. It's actually not that difficult to hit, although I think its a bit less stable than a hybrid hitting from the rough; heavy grass closes the face down more easily. Just love watching the penetrating ball flight when hitting it from the tee.
