In this video Ali tests which of a fairway wood, hybrid or long iron gives the best result. TaylorMade's M2 fairway wood and hybrid is pitched against the P790. Ball flight and numbers are used from the GC2 launch monitor to give accurate data to decide which one is best.

If I could hit a 3-iron 240 yards, I'd throw away the fairway woods!

Even though you don't like 5 wood, the stats on carry indicate that it is the only one of the three that can carry onto the green and stop there.  The hybrid and long iron are running up onto this green, but many times the hole will not allow that.

For me, 3 iron is good when I'm in the golf range, but when in the fairway, it's a gamble. My brother-in-law advised me to use Wood 3, or Wood 5. Still, using Wood is a bit of a struggle for me to use. Finally, I was told to use hybrid. The result is satisfactory at least in my perspective.

How... a rescue should in general give you a higher flighted line, however yours is low as hell. Either you are not swinging the hybrid optimal or you really should stick with the iron :) Nice comparison though!

Well for you 3i smoked the others. I used to prefer 2i driving iron. To my eye I couldn't stand the look of any wood or hybrid behind the ball. I finally found a 3 wood that sets up nice behind the ball. It's a Callaway. I'm loving it. As a matter of fact, I've even took the driver out of the bag. I'm just carrying 3 wood, 5 iron, 9 iron and putter. You might think that is crazy but, I think the average golfer would do well to find a few clubs they can really hit. Rather than 14 swings they'll never master 👍

Titleist 816 Hybrids were the first hybrids I didn't pull hook. They are awesome.

After much experimenting, I’ve stuck with long irons. 2 3 and 4.
I prefer control and accuracy over all out distance. long irons do that for me, especially in windy conditions.
Hybrids and fairway woods do have a place when needed.

Use a long iron and you end-up shaping the shot in an undesired way, or worse. Hit fat, the club digs into the ground and the shot comes up short. The hybrid is a god send b/c it does not dig in if hit fat and it does not shape shots -- goes straight every time. Love my Cobra Bafflers. Great game improvement tool.

I think they are all pretty good off a range mat. Would love to see these from winter fairways or light rough.

I just don’t like the way hybrids look behind the ball and I’ve found very few fairway woods that give me confidence at address whereas long irons seem to suit my eye better and, unsurprisingly, I hit the long irons better too. Interesting comparison. I think long irons are under rated and should make a comeback

Good video and I like driving iron as well but this was just a personal preference that you were comfortable with. You are also a very low handicap. This is not for the normal golfer.

3 irons always seem more consistent than equivalent hybrids or woods..though hybrid easy to hit longest ..IF one gets the swing right I feel.

Need to talk about dispersion more as the balance is often between dispersion and height. Irons>hybrid>>wood accuracy and the opposite for descent angle. Dispersion with your iron is much more accurate (with one swing off) while wood is from 29 yards left 19 right. (average number are not helpful looking at dispersion when you go both sides of target).

I learned to say that "I tend to shape the ball a little too much", when I'm off target, instead of saying I pulled or pushed. Positive thinking.

See a Utility Iron in a bag and you see "ego" for most the Wood\Hybrid is wayyyy more forgiving and easy to get nice and high and soft landing....
