This is what happens when we treat animals as commodities.

PetSmart claims that they love pets and would even do ‘anything for pets’, unless that means not treating them like objects, using them for profiteering motivations or leaving them to die in dumpsters.

However, we also claim that we love animals while paying for industries that cause more animal suffering and harm than any other. Case in point, people online were outraged that PetSmart had been dumping live fish and leaving them to die in awful ways. Yet every single year, as many as 2.3 trillion fish are pulled from our oceans and killed for us. These fish also die in awful ways and suffer greatly as a consequence of what we pay for.

This doesn’t even include the hundreds of billions of farmed fish who are intensively farmed and killed for us as well. In fact, when looking at the sheer numbers and what is inflicted upon fish, no other industry on the planet kills more animals or contributes to more suffering.

So it’s important that we are outraged by what PetSmart inflicts on animals. However, as well as being against the suffering of fifty fish at PetSmart, we should also be against the suffering that is inflicted upon trillions of other fish.

I'm nauseous.
Why do these people hate animals so damn much? I wouldn't do this to my worst freaking enemy.

I once went to PetSmart and saw a dying turtle. I actually thought he was dead. He was white and not moving. I tapped on the glass and he slowly opened his eyes. Seemed like it took all his energy. I took pics and left a review for others to see. I told the workes and no one cared. This is the result of seeing animals as $ signs.

They also throw away tons of dog and cat food every day instead of donating to shelters so me and a few others decided to pull it out and donate it ourselves.

PetSmart just lost my business. If they can't control their employees and monitor the animals then they really are not a good company and shouldn't promote that they are one.

Pets aren't more important than other Animals. All Animals are equal in bringing good things to the world, and food is not one of them.

I’m totally against all of it and I can’t believe Pet Smart does that it makes me want to check their dumpster on a daily basis😞😞

Also, going into petsmart and buying these creatures saves a life but frees up a spot for another. Imagine paying an animal abuser money to continue abusing animals, that's essentially what you are doing when you purchase an animal from a store under the false pretence that you're doing something moral.

People love to point at Peta but will ignore this cuz they're "just fish"

Cant believe they are still doing this, I was fired from working there for bringing this issue up, because they gave me the job of cleaning them up and counting the ones who committed suicide and I completed my job, but when it came time to finish the day of work I refused to put them all back in the tiny cups they were committing suicide in, cuz they were so tiny they couldn’t even turn around, the pet smart I worked for in Buckhead, Atlanta Georgia, which is probably still there was doing a sale where you buy 1 beta fish you get small globe to put them in 50% off so I thought I would let the poor guys have their space so they would be happier, but no instead I was yelled at, told I was stupid, and fired for refusing to throw them away or put them in abusive situations, this was literally more than a decade ago, shame on petsmart I hope they get what they deserve, bankruptcy . @EarthlingEd #thanksbutnotanks #pleasedontbuyaticket

Humans don’t even treat each other good, so I’m not surprised we do this to animals

I hope this was reported to the local SPCA? I know you have reservations about that organization, but this is a matter that they should, and I believe would, take up …

My guy, we can't even convince people that bombing children is morally wrong, it's no surprise that this ends up falling on deaf ears

The difference between the two is the fish that are being caught on the boats are being used for food. They’re not just being caught and left to die and then thrown away.

“We can see examples of fish remembering people after months or even years.

Beyond the rich social lives that so many fish demonstrate, the even more ethically relevant consideration is the overwhelming evidence that fish feel pain.

“To learn about how most wild fish die, I spoke to Professor Culum Brown, an expert in fish cognition:”

Prof Brown: “Fish are most often captured by a huge seine net that’s dragged behind a boat.

"At first, a fish tries to maintain their speed and keep in front of that net. Eventually, they get exhausted and fall back into the net, where they may be crushed by the other fishes.

"The net is then dragged up to the surface.

“Depending on how deep they are, on the way up the fish suffer from barotrauma- which means the gas inside their bodies expands rapidly… air bubbles inside of their bodies basically explode.

"Most of those animals have a swim bladder and air can not escape from that swim bladder fast enough- and so it ruptures.

"Sometimes the stomach and/or the swim bladder are forced out through the mouth because there’s nowhere else for it to go.

“Once brought up to the surface, they begin to experience gravity and the weight not only of themselves but of all the other fish in the net.

"They are then dumped onto the deck of the boat and sorted. A good number of them will suffocate if they’re not already dead.

“Most of the fishes will be put on ice which slows down their metabolic rate rather than kill them.

"This prolongs their suffering for two or three more hours on ice until they eventually die of suffocation”. #HumaneHancock
