Got fired from petsmart for taking a sick bird home instead of throwing him in the dumpster. Now, several years later, he's perfectly healthy

We bought 3 Guinea pigs from a pet smart around 8 years ago. After we brought them home for less than 24 hours they all developed a contagious eye infection. We brought it to the vet and they said to get our money back because it can spread to humans and our other animals and it takes a few days for this to develop for us to have noticed. So they were already sick when we bought them. We took them back the the same store. The kid that sold them to us a day earlier took the kennel they were in and tossed it into a shopping cart! I was shocked and said there are 3 sick Guinea pigs in there…he said I know and now we will take care of it. I asked how and he said I’m returning them to the breeder. A few hours later I still wasn’t feeling right about how he tossed them and didn’t care. I went aback to the store and asked a different employee what happened to them…she was speechless and couldn’t answer my question…seemed nervous and walked away saying she will ask her manager. Another lady came out and said they all died.
I asked from what??? They just had an eye infection. She said sorry and walked away.
When I left I drove to the back of the store, there was the kennel …next to the dumpster with all 3 still alive inside. Scared and now covered with ants! I brought them home cleaned them up. Isolated them each until they were better and spend a few hundred on medicine for them. We had them for 5-6 years.
Thor, Yeti & Frog lived a long happy life until it was their time to pass knowing they were loved and are still missed.

One time, a cashier told me that if I wanted a free hamster, go to the dumpster, there is a lot of them. I went, and it was true.

I worked for petsmart Canada for a year, and while we never threw away any animals at my location, the company was terrible in many other ways.

I applied to Petsmart years ago. The whole interview while I was asking questions about the in-store animal care, the manager kept steering the conversation back to maximizing sales. Gave me an odd feeling so after I got home I looked into former employees experiences and heard of shit like this. The manager called the next day and offered me a job and I less than politely declined.

I get it's a retail job but these are lives you're dealing with. How can you work at such a place without giving a shit about the animals?

Get the store managers who do that, fired. I used to work at Petsmart. Every animal that died (either from transportation OR from being inside its cage/tank) was disposed of by the animal hospital attached to it or in a specific biohazard/hazardous waste bin. Not a normal dumpster. That's unacceptable

I’m not even American and it’s painfully honest to me (not just from this video but over the years) that petsmart is the worst place for animals to be in. They see them as a product, so if the product is sick they throw it away.

The whole pet selling industry is a cesspool for this kind of abuse. Don't trust anything bigger than a family store or a shelter for that sort of thing.

Not only is it cruel to animals, but it could be an invasive species nightmare. If the animals escape and breed out of control, it could be an environmental disaster.

I worked at Petsmart and our store NEVER did this. Someone needs to evaluate the manager at this particular store. This is insane.

One of my many cousins goes dumpster diving for fun. He went into a petsmart dumpster and found a black cat and three kittens. Took them home and they are better than ever. Named them Loli, Pookie, Amber, and Sweeny.

A Petco we went to once had music blasting so loud our ears were hurting by the time we left. Imagine how much pain the animals were in since their ears are more sensitive. The puppies were all cowering in their crates. 😢
