Well with all the doom and gloom in the world at the moment. That little gem has cheered me up no end!

Just to clarify: there have been 5 large mass extinctions, and quite a few more smaller extinction events, in the last 540 million years. NONE of the big 5 have been caused by an impact, except the last (the dinosaurs one, or K-T boundary extinction event), and even then, not all agree the impact alone was enough to take out 60% of species, as there also was an ongoing very large volcanism-related event ( the Deccan Traps, if you want to check).
The biggest extinction of all, the Permo-Triassic event, most definitely had no associated large impacts. And neither do almost all of the not-so-big extinctions. At the same time, we know of many impacts during the last 540 million years which do not correlate with an extinction event.
In short, impacts are not exactly a welcome experience, but usually not the cause of mass extinctions.
