My Attempt At A Watercolour Rooster 🐓

This week I attempt to paint a rooster and incur a few problems along the way. Watch me sort them out and achieve a piece I am reasonably happy with by the end.

He is gorgeous! Watercolors are beautiful, but using them is a slow process. Putting them away overnight was a smart move. Doing light layers and building the color slowly, layer-by-layer works best. It is boarding to stop working and let each layer dry, but it leads to the best results. One of the coolest techniques I’ve been taught is to take an Exacto knife/craft knife and very lightly score feathers by putting in the central stem first. Then lightly score some shorter curving feathers off the central stem. Using a light water color wash, the pigments should fall into the score lines and give you instant details. It also works for painting veins in leaves. Thank you for showing us your continued learning process. It teaches us that practice is necessary if we want to learn a new skill set like water coloring. Nina, thank you so much for sharing your watercolor rooster! I admire that you are okay with moving forward even though it's trial and error with watercolors, especially when at a beginner phase. Good morning nina, it was your rooster that woke me up this morning, so it did speak to me. I do so recogniize your struggle with watercolours and think it is so courageous you do this on video. I always give it the pippi approach, I never done it before, so I think I can do it and I think you did a great job and when you're going to paint his"brother" you will use this experience. Thank you for sharing your process! For all of us beginners, it is helpful to see that you kept on going and tried different things and the end result is a lovely rooster. Nicely done Nina, he’s a jolly fine rooster. As others have mentioned before, masking fluid. Let it be your friend to create those thin white lines to denote feathers xxx
