Got this one too. I love it on travel but also the colours are so vibrant

Agreed. First week I got it I couldn't stop using it. It's also so adorably tiny. And you can get replacement pans for your palette instead of having to buy a whole new palette.

I agree. There is no better portable watercolor set out. I actually have three set up with general, portrait and landscape color stories.

just a reminder while your paints are obviously important if you don’t have good paper you won’t see how pigmented or bright your paints actually are!

I love it, but I always end up exchanging the white pan for a magenta pan I buy seperatly. In my humble opinion, controlling light and dark without white is much easier than trying to achieve nice pinks and purples without a magenta.

But it's only a few extra bucks, so those sets are still definutively worth it.

Got this set as a gift from my high school art teacher! Was my go-to set for years since it was my first palette, and was what got me interested in doing watercolors!

If you prefer student grade paints then I would still recommend buying 1-2 pans of colours that you already have in professional grade as well as some sample 300gsm 100%cotton paper (stores like jacksons sell single sample sheets super cheap) and try them out for just some little paintings. Just because professional materials behave very very differently and it really helps to have a tiny bit of experience with them to know what parts of the student grade paints are just because of the paints. I started with cotman too and it was a huge "oh shit" moment when I started using professional materials and realised some of the things I was always struggling with and learning to do better were actually just a result of the materials. Cotman paints are very good student grade paints though.

Winsor & Newton and Grumbacher make excellent mid-range watercolors. W&N qouache in tubes are also excellent. Really the only thing better would be Schminke colors - but they are pricey.

I've got the larger Windsor Newton watercolour set and I agree about having too many colours to choose from. It is a little overwhelming.
I overcome this by choosing a few colours and separate them before I start. I stick to those colours only, I use them straight or blend them together. Stops me overthinking.🙂✅✅

A small paint tin is a lot more portable and you can get small water containers that fill the same foot print. I do like the Windsor and newton paints though. Pity they do a lot of plastic palettes.

I have a small starter set. Not even a set really, all it has is the little paint cubes, a separable pallet connected to its lid and a basic brush like that in the video connected to pallet. I carry a spray bottle filled with water and some sponges in my pencil case. It gets the job done for me.
