In an eye-opening session before American lawmakers on January 31, TikTok CEO Chew Shou Zi found himself at the center of an inquiry alongside executives from Discord, Facebook's parent company Meta, Snap, and X (formerly Twitter).

The focus was the pressing concern over the impact of social media on children's well-being. This marked Chew's second appearance in front of US lawmakers in less than a year, previously questioned in March 2023 regarding TikTok's connections to China and its protective measures for young users.

During the hearing, US Senator Tom Cotton persistently probed Chew about his ties to the Chinese Communist Party. Despite Chew's consistent clarification of his Singaporean nationality, questions lingered about his citizenship, passport, and possible CCP membership, to which Chew firmly responded, "Senator, I'm Singaporean. No."
