Noise Figure is a critical figure of merit when designing components found in modern communication systems. We will start with Noise Figure (NF) fundamentals and describe the common NF measurement techniques used today and continue by introducing the Cold Source technique implemented in the PNA-X. We will describe the Vector and scalar Noise Figure measurement techniques to measure Amplifiers and Receivers. These NF measurement methods can also be applied to connectorized and on wafer devices and we will show how the PNA-X noise figure solution improves the measurement uncertainty. As a final topic we will explain some of the extensibility of the PNA-X Noise Figure solution to measuring Noise Parameters.
