Have you ever had a situation where the DM is trying to write a novel for his favorite NPC and you are just along for the ride? Today's dnd horror story from r/rpghorrorstories centers around a DMPC who tries to get revenge by constantly stealing the party's spotlight, but the newly added Edgelord is able to black-ball the DM.

Some players will hear this and take it as justification to steamroll the dm at every turn

The advice to run as fast as possible is valid because he's rolling initiative.

I had a table of murderhobos.. and ONE person made a compelling backstory. You could hear a pin drop when the paladin almost took out that characters nemesis. I didn't even have a combat set up for that session but sweet hell the chaos

It honnestly depend of the situation. It hurt when the DM try to give some depth to his BBEG but it's ruined because the team is just there for blood. How many time i ended up campaign with folks having no idea who they killed, why and what he wanted.

And i dont want them to punish them with a "well since you dont talked to him you dont know have the ints leading you to how to difuse the arcane nuke he prepared" either because they'll cry that it's railroading and "oi juss did wut muh charakter woul do 😠".

To me, the reason why less and less people want to DM is because more and more players ask for quality and complex scenario but make 0 effort to flesh it out themselves by building cool dramatic moments to please both them and the DM.

My villain: delivering a monologue
Druid: “We get it your evil can we just fight now?”

I've had moments where I genuinely believed that a certain thing I wanted to railroad my players into would have been appreciated by them, but they either intentionally or unintentionally avoided it. Kinda sucks, but I can always pull a quantum ogre and just move the moment back onto their pathway.

One time my players destroyed my entire outline by joining the villain and I remember my first thought was just “welp; thats gonna take a while to address on my end” I wasn’t even mad i was just flustered about having to end the session early because my prep was moot at that point 😂

I'm new to being a DM (running dragon of icespire peak) and one thing I've picked up is to have your campaign like a Railroad but your train has the ability to hop onto different rails doing loops and can transform into a fighter jet at the worst time possible

My guy if the players expect the DM to have a story and if they upturn the story at every turn or they fuck up months of build and planning do you think the DM is not allowed to be annoyed even a little

i think the best way to avoid this is to discuss your campaign setting beforehand. for a campaign I’ve got coming up, i asked my players to choose their preference between two genres that i had ideas for and they pretty much unanimously chose a political mystery; they now know that’s it gonna be a more serious vibe and that they’re gonna want to pay attention when i describe details or reveal information. if you try to launch into a dark, info-heavy campaign without consulting them, they’re gonna be sillies

I have been fortunate enough with my players that they allow me to have my narrative moment as a DM when it calls for it. Especially when it is with the final BBEG fight. They allow me to have the BBEG say their final words because they know that it’s my way to say goodbye to that character that I built up for them to hate and fight.

And it makes me really happy when I see my players overcome the BBEG and kick their ass because it just makes their characters story all the better.

FYI, I am currently running Decent into Avernus and watched my players (with good rolls, beat the Dungeon of the Dead Three with Opium and a dead rat. Didn’t expect it to happen that way but they were being clever and I rolled with their shenanigans.

One time early in the session, I was trying to explain to the all male party that there are pissed-off tree and water nymphs up ahead and to be careful, but they bull rush ahead because I said nymphs, then the surprise and anger when they got turned into trees or drowned

I had someone my group used to play with DM like that. We were fighting a dragon (I forget what kind and the lvl and such) but his intention was to TPK the party with it. Well our rouge with an enchanted dagger got a Nat 20 which was JUST enough damage to end the dragon (as we had been fighting it for awhile and chipped its hp away) when it finally dawned on him we beat the dragon cause he had nothing to save it he flipped out and literally flipped the table before he tried punching the one who played the rouge. Needless to say he was never invited back

Counterpoint I had to sit my player down after a session to let them know stopping the game during a pivotal story moment to correct me on a timeline inconsistency that arose because of a character background element I was not made aware of was inappropriate.

1. Always improv, always roll with the punches, you’ll have a better time
2. As a player, read the DM a little and see if they do have a moment prepared and lean into it.

I don't even write like that. It's why I can't do endings first, because I let my characters go, have some points I want to guide them to, but sometimes have to throw those points out because the characters won't listen.

(Yes I also have DID. No, I don't know if that's related. Probably is? Idk.)

Dnd is about creating a story. That being said, the fun story parts are when players do things that are unexpected. Makes things interesting.

If I spent 5 hours writing a backstory and monologue for my BBEG and my barbarian instant kills him right as he’s about to give his big speech, of COURSE ima be pissed.
